Vermeil plans to start Harris, but Har rington and Oliver should see a lot of action. Vermeil said he is quite 'impressed with Oliver, an excellent blocker and good -pass receiver. Brings Shotgun Baclc( Everyone thinks of the Dallas Cowboys when the "shotgun" formation is mentioned. But the San Francisco 49ers had it first, and coach Bill Walsh is bringing it back this season. Red Hlckey brought the formation to the' 49ers and abandoned it in the early 1960s.

Then Tom Landry refined it and made it a Dallas trademark, with Roger Staubach dropping back several steps be if Bears' quarterback Vince Evans calls plays, i Evans Feels Confident Now He Is No. 1 From Tribune Wires Ken Anderson is expected to be the starting quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals in their first exhibition game Saturday night against the Bucs at Tampa Stadium. Bengal head coach Forrest Gregg said from the club's Wilmington, Ohio, training camp that although Anderson would start the game, backup quarterbacks Jack Thompson and Turk Schonert also likely were to see action against Tampa Bay. 'We'll start out with our regular offen-" sive defensive units and then make changes as we go along," said Gregg! 1 Anderson completed all eight of his pass attempts for 80 yards and a touchdown in last Saturday's which Gregg said suffered from a lack of aggressive action. Thompson completed eight of 12 passes for 133 yards and one TD but was intercepted twice.

Schonert was six of nine for 36 yards. r. Gregg said he was optimistic that offensive left tackle Anthony Munoz, who had a stellar rookie year last season, will have recovered sufficiently from a "pulled hamstring to play in Tampa Listed as doubtful for the game are wide receiver Isaac Curtis and running back Nathan Poole, both-sidelined with pulled hamstrings, Wide receiver Don Bass and safeties Dick Jauron and Shafer Suggs, all recovering from knee injuries, will not see action in the game. Avoid Injuries Dick Vermeil says the top priority for his Philadelphia Eagles in the National Football League preseason is not to get anybody hurt. I.

The Eagles open their four-game exhibition schedule Thursday night against the Houston Oilers in the Astrodome. The team is scheduled to go to Houston on two commercial flights since its charter was canceled because of the air controllers' strike. In addition to avoiding injuries, Ver.r meil's goals include execution of offensive and defensive fundamentals. u.J 'Those two, avoiding injuries and basic execution, are most important," said the coach of last year's National Conference champions. '-f rv r-i: Vermeil, whose team lost in Super Bowl XV last January to the Oakland Rajders, said he plans to play most of his regulars in the first half against the Oilers.

"In the second half we'll play more younger people. I don't know if everybody will get in (the game), but quite a few people will. I may substitute in the first half with people competing for starting jobs," Vermeil said Tuesday at the team's training camp on the campus of West Chester State College in West Chester, Pa. 1 Vermeil plans to Vest the shotgun pass- ing installed in the Eagles' of- fense for the first time. jctiaojR.i.

Although they probably won't use it in their first exhibition game today at Seattle against the Walsh thinks the 49ers will employ the formation in at least 15 percent of its offensive plays during the season.

New York Jets, hobbled by achilles tendini-, tis, will be, sidelined the remainder of the week and will miss Friday night's National Football League exhibition game in Denver, the' team announced from its Hempstead, N.Y., training camp. The cuts reduced to 84 the Jets' training camp roster.

The tendinitis kept Walker out of workouts last week and when he tried to return to practice Monday and Tuesday, he aggravated it. "It's nothing serious right now but it could develop into something real bad," Walker said. "At this stage," Coach Walt Michaels said Tuesday, "I'm not concerned about it. It's not that serious. And with tight end Jerome Barkum scheduled to jemain hospitalized through the weekend with back spasms, Mickey Shuler will start and rookie Tim Moon from Virginia will get additional playing time in Barkum's place against the Broncos. Jurors Confused Jurors in the NFL-Raiders antitrust trial in Los Angeles, breaking silence in their sixth day of deliberations, told a judge Tuesday they were confused about part of his instructions. After receiving the query, Federal Court Judge Harry Pregerson summoned attor-. neys representing the National Football League, the Oakland Raiders, the Los Angeles Coliseum Commission and the city of Oakland to his chambers. A short time later, he called the jurors into the courtroom, apparently to answer their written questions.

There was no indication how close the jury was to a verdict, or whether it was leaning toward a decision in favor of the NFL or the Raiders. The Coliseum Commission first filed suit against the NFL after the Raiders' proposed move to the Coliseum; left vacant when the "Los-Angeles Rams" moved to Anaheim Sta-' dium in suburban Orange County, was re-; jected by other team owners. Raiders owner AI Davis then joined the suit, claiming a rule in the NFL constitution 5 that requires a three-fourths vote to ap- prove a move of any team violates antitrust The seven-woman, three-man panel, which got the case last Wednesday, has met every day except Sunday. The jurors had not previously made any comment to the court. The panel must decide whether other NFL team owners violated the Sherman Antitrust Act by conspiring to restrict Davis' right to move his team where he wanted, or i SIZE PRICE SIZE PRICE SIZE PRICE 58.95., At it ion 145.10 145-12 155-12 155-12 145-13 155-13 29.95 37.95 39.95 39.95 35.95 40.95 165-13 175-13 155-14 165-14 175-14 45.95 54.95 44.95 48.95 .53.95 58.95 165-15 49.95 54.95 59 63.95 46.95 Morobki Given Nod Mike Moroski, the backup quarterback who completed only seven of 20 passes against Cleveland, will get a to redeem himself in the Atlanta Falcons' second preseason game Saturday at Oakland.

Evans' rise was not an easy one. Although he was the fans' choice to try to resurrect the Bears' lackluster offense, he had to convince the Chicago coaching braintrust he was the man.

He had two opportunities. The first came in 1979 when he was called upon to start by Coach Neill Armstrong. But a combination of factors, including a staph infection, caused him to lose ground in the quarterback derby. In 1980, Mike Phipps was the No. 1 quarterback, due mostly to the strength of his performance in leading Chicago to a wild card berth in the playoffs the preceding year.

The Bears lost three of their first four games and Evans was again called upon. He did not muff his second chance. Although Chicago fell short in its drive for. the playoffs, Evans showed the talent and maturity the Bears had predicted for him after they drafted him out of Southern California. During the Bears' 61-7 rout of Green Bay in November, Evans completed 18 of 22 passes for 316 yards and three touchdowns, even though he did not play the entire For; the completed 148 of 278 for 2,039 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Six of his completions were more than 50 yards, four resulting in tcmchdowhs. Entering his fifth season, Evans is ready for the challenge of being No. 1 all season. "Does it make a difference knowing you are No. Are you kidding? Of course it does.

It makes all the difference in the world," Evans said. "It shows that the people around here have given me the confidence shot I needed." Evans took extra time in the off-season to work with new offensive coordinator Ted Marchibroda on designing a more pass-oriented offense for the Bears. Marchibroda is looking for more big plays and believes Evans is capable of providing them. "Vince is capable of the bomb at any time. He needs more seasoning but he has a chance of becoming a great quarterback," said Marchibroda, who helped make Bert Jones a top quarterback with the Baltimore Colts.

"His style is different than Bert, but you can see this man has talent." Evans admits he is "excited" about working under Marchibroda. "They've got some plays designed that should help put some more bite into our attack," Evans says. Armstrong and Marchibroda decided to allow Evans to call his own plays' during the preseason schedule, breaking from Armstrong's previous policy of having the sidelines determine the plays. "I think I can handle it. I was calling some of my own plays toward the end of last year anyway," Evans says.

Evans concedes when he was given earlier shots at the starting spot with the Bears, he was overanxious. "I thought I had to make a big play every time I threw the ball," Evans recalled. "I didn't think as much as I needed and I made some mistakes." While Evans could complete some long passes, he was intercepted or sacked for major losses in the past. Evans now says he has learned a valuable lesson: when not to throw the football. "That's as important as hitting a receiver," he said.

'-a Vermeil said how much of the shotgun the Eagles use against Houston depends on third down situations. "I imagine we'll use it on 11 or 12 snaps, maybe more," the coach estimated. Ed Hughes, a former Dallas assistant familiar with the shotgun used by the Cowboys for years, helped install the formation for the Eagles. Hughes joined the Eagles' staff this year. The Eagles may be without starting offensive tackle Stan Walters, who has been nursing a knee injury.
