Tribune Photo By John Coffeen By WALT RIDDLE Tribune Sports Writer BROOKSVILLE Pasco has become the first high school in the six years The Tribune has selected an All-Area boys' basketball team to place more than two players on the 10-man squad. The Pirates, whose 28-3 record was the best in the area during the 1979-80 season, have three players on the 10-man squad. Leading the way is The Tribune's Player Of The Year Robert Johnson, who is the first eager ever to win the award twice (he was chosen last year). Joining senior Johnson from Pasco is junior point guard Mark DeVoss and forward Marvin Myers, who has the distinction of being the first sophomore ever named to the team.

Bob Edwards, head coach at Pasco, was a repeat winner of The Tribune's Coach Of The Year award. There are only two repeaters on the All-Star unit this year-Johnson, and Keith Edwards of Williston. Rounding out the team is Carlton Green of Citrus, Ted Hopkins of Crystal River, Mike Revell of Hernando, Mickey Farrell of Zephyrhills, Edwin Barnes of Bronson and Ricky Easmon of Dunnellon. DeVoss and Easmon join Myers as the only underclassmen (both are jun- Totaling 750 points, averaging 24.8 a game and grabbing 13.7 rebounds earned Robert Johnson (right) of Pasco Player Of The Year honors. Johnson closed out his brilliant prep career by leading Pasco to its second straight district title. The 6-4'2, 180-pound power forward tallied 750 points as a senior to lead the area in scoring (24.8 points). He also led in rebounding, averaging 13.7 a game. Johnson, who finished his 2-year varsity career with just under 2,000 points, never stopped working to improve his talents. "I would say he worked an average of two hours a day during the off season," said Edwards.

"He improved each season and still hasn't reached his potential. He will be what we call the shooting forward in DeVoss is the best point guard in the area and the Pirates have him back for another year. The quarterback served as a coach on the floor for Pasco. "Mark just does so many things for us that never show up in the scorebook," said Edwards. The 6-1, 165-pound junior averaged 11.5 points and nine assits per game.

"Mark is the best point guard I have coached," added Edwards. Myers, a six-footer, started all but two games for the Pirates, averaging 7.5 points and 9 rebounds. Edwards calls the young man a very strong re-bounder, who is aggressive at both ends of the floor. "Marvin is a money player, who won games for us in pressure filled situations," said Edwards. "He played the same every game and was our top defensive player." Farrell, a 5-10 senior guard, was the leading scorer and assist man for the Bulldogs, leading them to an 18-9 record and a.

berth in the district finals against Pasco. The flashy ballhandler averaged 13.9 points and 8 assits. He was considered to be the second best point guard in the area. Edwards does it all and was what Coach John Rowe called 'the most unselfish basketball player The six-foot senior played center, forward and guard for the Red Devils, averaging 14 points, 12 rebounds and five assists per game. "He's a total team player who can play any position on the floor with equal ability," said Rowe.

The best way to describe Green is a 'diamond in the The 6-6," 200-pound senior finished his third year of organized basketball by averaging 17.5 points and 11 rebounds a game. He closed out his prep career by pouring in 35 points in the district tournament. "Carlton is about where a junior would be in progress," said Coach Bob Trenta. "He's going to make someone a fine college player. "Carlton came strong at the end.

The six-foot forward averaged 18.5 points a game and scored 29 in the district title game and 21 in a losing effort to P.K. Yonge in the region title contest. Barnes was a power forward for the 1-A Eagles, leading them to the district and region crowns before they lost to eventual state champion Daytona Beach Warner Christian in the sectional title contest. The 6-1, 180-pound senior was the No.

2 scorer in the area with a 20.1 average and led his team in rebounds with ah average recovery of 13 a contest. "He filled his role to perfection on our team," said Bronson Coach John Dulaney. "Edwin has great court awareness and had the knack of finding the ball off the backboard, especially on the offensive boards." mi Js I rf I 1 111 3 By NICK PUGLIESE Tribune Sports Writer DADE CITY While the Pasco Pirates were running up the best record in the area (28-3), were winning 23 games in a row, were going undefeated at home for the second season in a row, were winning the Gulf Coast Conference and Class 3-A, District 7 titles for the second straight year and were ranked second in the state, a few things may have been overlooked about the Dade City cagers. For instance, Pasco started only one senior, forward Robert "Magic" Johnson. The Pirates started a sophomore (Marvin Myers) and used another sophomore (Shawn Johnson) as their sixth man.

And the "Big Red" roundballers lost three starters from last year's outstanding 24-6 squad. For handling the situation with such success, Pasco's Bob Edwards is The Tribune's All-Area Coach of the Year for the second time in a row. He edged Bronson head coach John Dulaney for top coach honors. Dulaney guided the Class 1-A Eagles to district and regional titles, before Bronson was defeated by eventual state champion Daytona Beach Warner Christian in the sectionals. The Levy County cagers ended up with a 19-8 record.

Edwards took a starting five of one senior, three juniors and one sophomore to the best record in the school's history, and so completely dominated basketball in the area that the District 7 race became known as Pasco and the Eight Dwarfs. No one expected the Pirates to do that well, including Edwards. "I really was surprised with our success," Edwards said, "I knew we had a good team, one capable of winning 18-20 games. We set a goal of 25 wins, but I thought that was too high. "I guess I underestimated my players.

They progressed farther and quicker than I thought they could. The kids were willing to work hard, and it sure paid off. "There's no shortcut for success, and our kids are living proof of what hard work can do." The fifth-year head coach said there were several keys to his team's ability, to stay on top of the area's basketball standings. "We played as close to our potential as we could," he said. "We showed gradual, slow improvement all season long.

Our players had plenty of dedication. Our scheduling helped top. We played a lot of our early games on the road, and we finished the regular season with tough games against Auburn-dale and Tampa Jesuit." Of course, the Pirates greatly benefitted from Edwards' excellent coaching job, which gains even more luster when one considers that the Austin Peay graduate also held the positions of dean of boys and athletic director at the high school this past season. "It was very hectic, but I knew it was going to be trying and tiring," he said. "I felt emotionally drained at times, and I was actually relieved at the end of the season.

But I love coaching basketball. If it wasn't enjoyable, I wouldn't have done it "It was a pressure-packed season. Now I know what Joe Hall meant a few seasons ago when he led Kentucky to the national title and said he never felt so much pressure. They were expected to win it all, and so were we. I think a lot of people thought we should win the 3-A title after we beat three 4-A teams in the Pinellas Park Tip-Off Tournament." Edwards had kind words for all of his players, but a few special ones for The Tribune's Player of the Year Robert Johnson.

"Robert had an outstanding year," he said. "He's very dedicated and he has been for three years. Everyone wants to win, but not everyone is willing to pay the price. "Robert has paid his dues. He set high goals and he reached them." With the basketballs and nets barely put away, a lot of area cage fans are pointing to the Pirates as the team to beat again next season, what with four starters back.

i "I wouldn't say we are the team to beat next year," Edwards noted. "I would say we are a team to contend with. "Crystal River has a lot of good players back and they had a good jayvee team, as did Zephyrhills. Hernando will be physically strong. Gulf has nearly everyone back.

"It will be an interesting race." Marvin Myers, Pasco Mark DeVoss, Pasco Coach Bob Wardlow said that without senior forward Revell nothing worked in the Hernando offense. The 5-10 leaper, who played much taller, led the Leopards in scoring (12.5 points) and rebounding (11). "Mike was the best one-on-one player in the area, because of his quickness, strength and leaping ability," said Wardlow. Hopkins, Crystal River's captain, was only 5-8, but jumped with all the big trees from his forward position. The senior, who can dunk the ball with ease, was his team's leading scorer with a 15-point average, averaged six rebounds and four assits.
