PAGE SIX THE DAILY MICHIGAN: THURSDAY, JUNE 11, 1942. Artificially Created Inland Lake in Michgian Known Far as Favorite Vacation Spot ting Area, Hamlin Lake Famous to More Four Generations 'lake, Mason county's largest and most-extensively inland body of water, has everything for the perfect vacation, the summer visitor will find Wi'th a total length of almost 10 miles, Hamlin is one of the states best-known and largest lakes. Situated near Lake Michigan, it is only about 10 minutes drive north from Ludington. Although endowed by nature with all necessities to provide a visitor with the "time of his a continual improvement prbgram is invariably in progress at the lake and adjacent resorts. This program assures -the visitor the best and most modern-in resort facilities.

nHamlin lake forms the east boundary of Ludington State State park, generally recognized finest. The State park jjlslalso bounded on the wfest another Michigan'' 'Hamlin dam, which maintains the lake level, is found in the State park. The dam is the scene of annual spring seining activities, when, fish are caught in nets below: the dam and transplanted in Hamlin lake proper. This activity draws hundreds of sight-seers. Hanttin lake is fed by the Sauble river, the two joining at the northeast corner of the lake.

Sauble is one of the state's best-known trout streams. Lying in the shape of a huge Hamlin is divided into two almost-separate lakes, named Lowe'rland Upper Hamlin. closest to Ludington. is, four and one-half miles long and over a mile wide on the average. Upper Hamlin is five miles long and three-quarters of a mile across.

Both are expensively developed and equally popular. The shore of Lower Himlin and the northern shore Upper Hamlin present, for the most part, views of unbroken wilderness enhanced by wooded hil)s and unspotted sand dunes, among the largest in the jstate. In the summer, the hiker's delight; when snowballs, is it unsurpassed for wiMer sports. TJbiree pretty little bayous indent the eastern shoreline of Lower HjamUn, providing the nucleus ground which a large portion of. the lake's several- hundred summer homes and cot- tapes are found.

Good sized lakes in themselves, they offer virtually all advantages found on the main body of Hamlin lake. Boating, fishing, swimming and other forms of recreations can be indulged in almost as fully. Harry Shellenbarger. veteran resort operator, runs boat liveries and stores at both the South and North bayous, providing ser- i vices found at any high-class resort. A village of cottages nestles along the shore of South bayou, many owned and rented by Mr.

Shellenbarger to summer visitors. Another popular stopping place at South bayou is Sabin's resort, operated by Mi', and Mrs. Bailey Sabin of Ludington. Formerly known as Pepple's resort and Lakeside resort, the new owners provide every convenience for the resorter, cottages, boats, motors, bait, groceries and lunches being only a few of the many. Between South and Middle bayous stretches a continuous settlement of cottages, some simple, some elaborate, but for the most part privately owned.

This section is probably the best developed. It is here, also, the visitor will find Ken's Kamp, a new tourist stop, and the famed Sauole Inn, one of the middle- west's best known summer hostelries. The Log House, one of Nor- I them Michigan's largest dine- and-dance amusement! spots, is part of Sauble Inn. Completed last year, the place features the best in dance bands i and is also equipped with bowl- ing alleys, soda fountain, billiard tables and numberless other features. Middle bayou is the second largest of the three Lower Ham- lin bayous.

Here the visitor will find the popular White Birch I Inn, operated by Myers Peterson, and Wren's Roost, one of the fastest growing resorts in the county. Both offer all advan- i tages to the visitor, the former being best known as a fisherman's retreat and the latter for gayety and amusement. North bayou, largest of the three, is not as extensively developed as its sister bayous, but is best known for its black bass fishing. Mr. Shellenbarger op- crates the second of two boat; liveries The west side of Hamlin lake is also the scene of considerably development.

In addition to! dozens of cottages, the visitor i will find Hobby Crest, a unique little resort spot now going into its fifth year of operation under Mrs. Olga Ely. The resort stres- i ses advantages for families with children. Upper and Lower Hamlin are separated by the Narrows, a deep-water channel connecting the two bodies of water. First resort to the east of the narrows is Sunset bay, an area of fascinating wilderness and ex- tensive development.

Wildlife abounds in the entire Hamlin lake area but is most apparent i in this vicinity. East of Sunset bay lies In- dian Pete bayou, smaller con- siderably than those of Lower Hamlin but well favored with summer homes. Center of activity on Upper Hamlin are Barnhart's resort and Arcadia resort, the former operated by Joe Barnhart and the latter by Mr. and Mrs. Emil Grams.

These two spots provide the center of Upper Hamlin lake summer activities. Barnhart's has boats and motors for hire, garages, cottages, grocery store, and everything else a person would expect at a progressive summer resort. Arcadia court. immediately east of Barnhart's, is one of the hub of sailing activities on the lake.
