"There were no injuries that we know of, thankfully," said Jay Webb, an administrative deputy with the Harrison County Sheriff's Office. Power lines were brought across Interstate 20 about 4 p.m. Thursday as crews repaired the grid. "Right now in Waskom the power lines are being reconnected, and all of the roadways are clear," Webb said. "A lot of debris has just been pushed off to the side." SWEPCO spokesman Scott McCloud said there were 200 SWEPCO customers living in and near Waskom who experienced outages Wednesday night.

Supreme Court vastly increased the powers of big business and unions to influence government decisions Thursday, recasting the U.S. political landscape in advance of crucial congressional elections in November. In a sweeping 5-4 ruling, the divided court freed business and unions to spend their millions directly to sway elections for president and Congress. The ruling overturned parts of a 63-year-old law that said companies and unions could be forbidden to use money from their general treasuries to produce and run campaign ads urging the election or defeat of particular candidates byname.
