Mine permit process advances (Continued from Page 1) The company will also plug bore heads and bulkheads where water can get in and out of the mine.

Casey said this action will reduce inflow and discharge by 70 percent. Casey outlined the effects various decisions would have: If Copper Range were to walk away today there would be no solution mining, no treatment of water in 60 years, he said, eventually the Mineral River would have no fresh life and 10 acres of Lake Superior in 60 years would have chronic toxicity with a cline in growth and reproduction rate. He pointed out that Copper Range would not be legally required to treat water discharge 58 years from now. If small-scale solution mining is undertaken the bulkhead and plugging of boreholes would be done which would slow down the environmental impact and reduce the area affected in Lake Superior to five acres. Solution mining with the proposed treatment of water would have no environmental impact at the Mineral River or on Lake Superior.

Girl recovering from dog injuries (Continued from Page 1) The owner of the dog, Alice May, of Watersmeet, received four citations from the Gogebic County Sheriffs Department. She faces charges of having an unlicensed and unvaccinated dog, allowing it to run loose and allowing the dog to attack. The dog's head was sent in to a crime lab in Lansing for rabies testing. Results of the tests won't be known for awhile. Caudill said he has insurance to cover his daughter's treatment through his job with the Watersmeet Schools.

He thanked members of the Watersmeet Fire Department and people of the town who have helped out. "We really appreciate their help," he said. Jim Dorrington drew special praise for being the first at the scene and treating the girl before the Conover ambulance could arrive. RICHARD CAUDILL Mellen returning seven veterans MELLEN, Wis. Brian Basolo's Mellen boys basketball team returns seven letterman and a good crop of underclassman.

Basolo feels his team will be strong at the guard spots, but short on height. "We will have to get into our running game to be successful. We have some good leaders, which will help until the underclassmen develop to give us some quality minutes," he offered. Returning are seniors George Padjen, Ben Rikkola, Darren Gilgen, Nathan Erickson and Chuck Hawkinson and juniors Mike Hutson and Nick Parker. In the Granite Diggers' first game, a 75-42 rout of Glidden, Padjen and Rikkola had 23 points each.

Filling out the roster are junior Brian Huber and sophomores Steve Popovich, Jesse Henri, Ed Schutte and Dennis Aho. Basolo's team, with its speed, quickness and depth, will rely on a full-court strategy, initiated at times by a full court press. To make the transition game more successful, rebounding is needed and that's not a Mellen strong point this year. "We don't Stadium land over budget DETROIT (AP) The city says it will cost $7.7 million more than originally estimated to buy the land for a proposed $235 million Tiger Stadium. The City Council on Monday approved use of $40 million in Downtown Development Authority funds for the stadium. The state has pledged $55 million and the Tigers $140 million. have a lot of team height, so rebounding will be a weakness, as will free throw shooting," Basolo said. "We have a strong schedule. In addition to the strong teams in the Indianhead, Bayfield, Washburn and Solon Springs, we have a non-league game with Division II school Ashland in a holiday tournament at Ashland," he said.

"The tourney field also includes Bayfield and Northwestern." He feels the conference is up for grabs. Casey said if the permit and solution mining are not done and no agreement is made for future treatment of water, the taxpayer would probably pay for cleanup. He said there is no guarantee Copper Range would be in existence 60 years from now, or that they would be legally liable.

"I don't know of any other case like this in the world," Casey said. Casey said that the permit would allow full-scale solution mining at White Pine, but noted the company has indicated it would conduct a 2-3 year pilot program of 1 million pounds of Manager takes new position (Continued from Page 1) "I am eager to take on a new city and a new challenge. He said he will continue to monitor the village and will help until a new manager is hired.

Anderson also offered to help a new manager in the transition phase. Village President Kurt Giesau wished Anderson well, but said he would "miss Glenn as both manager and good friend." Giesau said all of the council members would have liked Anderson to stay in Ontonagon. Once Anderson's official resignation is received, Giesau said the village will take applications for a new manager. Anderson will start full-time in Hancock Jan. 1.
