Corten steel was used because its high copper content develops a colorful patina. Foltz's conception of the work included subtle lighting emanating from the interior.

The sculpture was donated by Dr. Conrad DeBold of Dayton, Ohio, whose son graduated from Eckerd in 1970. While his son was not an art major, he developed an interest in art during his undergraduate days. ST. PETERSBURG Largo sculptor Doug Foltz didn't live to see his last work of art assembled, but 3,000 pounds of steel stands outside Eckerd College's Ranson Center for the Visual Arts as representatives of his imagination.

Foltz had completed the commissioned work shortly before an automobile accident took his life in THE METAL SCULPTURE richly colored by nature was recently moved to fje; college campus and assembled by sculptor Paul Eppling, an Eckerd graduate!
