HEARTLAND THE TAMPA TRIBUNE, Friday, June 9, 1978 6-C 2 Tampa Pitchers Picked; Draft Ends Chisox Stay Hot, Stop Twins, 2-1 4 if I American League Rangers, 5-4 ARLINGTON, Tex. (AP) The Texas Rangers backed Doyle Alexander's strong early pitching with a barrage of extra-base hits, then withstood a late rally and defeated the Kansas City Royals 5-4 Thursday night in the first game of a doubleheader. Alexander, 5-3, had a one-hitter through 6 2-3 innings, but gave up consecutive singles in the seventh and left the game with a 5-2 lead after giving up doubles to Hal McRae and George Brett opening the eighth. Darrell Porter then walked and Al Cowens singled, making it 5-3. After a sacrifice by John Wathan, pinch hitter Steve Braun knocked in another run on a grounder, but Kansas City could get no closer.

Andre Dawson hits 3-run homer Steve Rogers retired 19 in order Florida International, by Cincinnati in round 24; University of Miami outfielder Humberto Acosta by Milwaukee in the 25th round; Robert Murphy of Miami-Columbus, as a pitcher by Milwaukee in round 29; University of Florida pitcher Craig Pippin by Kansas City in round 30; and in round 38, Palm Beach JC pitcher John Shrewsberry by Cleveland, Dade-North SS Patrick Patterson by St. Louis and Florida State pitcher Michael Bretz by Pittsburgh. No players were taken from Hillsborough Community College, despite the Hawks' high national ranking and outstanding record. The draft wound its way through 48 rounds and 779 players, with Cleveland drafting pitcher Delbert Stacey of Rutland (Vt.) High School to end matters. In fact, Cleveland's final 15 picks were for pitchers.

Jose Alvarez, the former HCC star who was drafted earlier by Atlanta, was due in Tampa Thursday night for a brief stay and was then to report to Atlanta today. The Yankees signed two local draft picks from Eckerd Thursday first baseman Steve Balboni and outfielder Pete Khoury. Balboni, a second-round choice, was assigned to West Haven of the Eastern League and Khoury, a fifth-round pick, was sent to Fort Lauderdale of the Florida State League. Rogers 1-Hits L.A. (AP) Bill Nahorodny and Ralph Garr each doubled in a run, leading the surging Chicago White Sox to their 1 1th victory in the past 12 games, a 2-1 decision over the Minnesota Twins Thursday night. Nahorodny's double scored Henry Cruz, who had singled in the seventh inning, and Garr drove home Eric So-derholm in the eighth, making it 2-0. Soderholm had singled and reached third base on two wild pitches. Wilbur Wood, 6-5, went the first 7 2-3 innings for Chicago and allowed only seven hits, including a solo homer by Jose Morales in the eighth. Wood worked out of trouble in both the second and fourth innings.

In the second, the Twins loaded the bases with none out, but Wood got Roy Smalley and Bob Randall to hit into force plays, and Butch Wynegar popped out. Minnesota put runners at first and second with none out in the fourth but was unable to score. After singles by Morales and Larry Wolfe, Smalley grounded into a double play and Morales was left stranded at third when Wood struck out Wynegar. After giving up the homer to Morales, Wood walked Wolfe and was relieved by Jim Willoughby, who got Smalley on a grounder to end the inning. He then set down the Twins in order in the ninth.

Rogers, 7-5, gave up a first-inning homer to Reggie Smith, his 10th of the year, then retired 19 batters in a row until Steve Garvey led off the eighth by reaching on a two-base throwing error by third baseman Larry Parrish.

Smith and Garvey were the only Los Angeles batters to reach base off Rogers, who struck out six. Dawson's homer in the sixth broke a 1-1 tie, created on a run-scoring single by Dave Cash in the fifth. Parrish stroked a one-out single, to left in the fifth for the Expos' first hit off Sutton, 4-6, was sacrificed to second by Rogers, and scored on Cash's bouncing single up the middle. Tony Perez and Ellis Valentine singled with one out in the Montreal sixth and, after Gary Carter struck out, Dawson hammered his ninth homer of the season over the left center field wall. By JOE HENDERSON Tribune Sports Writer The major league baseball draft, which began Tuesday with thunder when Tampa's Lenny Faedo was drafted 16th overall, ended Thursday with a whimper.

Only two Tampa players were draftedJohn DeVincenzo, a pitcher for Tampa University and Chuck Hernandez, Tampa Catholic pitcher. DeVincenzo was taken in the 27th round by Philadelphia and Hernandez departed in the 28th round to Oakland. Faedo, Jefferson's slugging shortstop, signed a contract with Minnesota for what, was believed to be a substantial bonus and was assigned to Eliza-bethton of the Applachian rookie League. Three players from area high schools were taken. Phil Teston, who has signed a scholarship with Florida College, was drafted in the 25th round out of Land O'Lakes by Philadelphia.

Greg Key of Inverness-Citrus High, brother of former FSU football star Larry Key, went to Oakland in the 29th round while Eugene Nelson of Dade City-Pasco was drafted by Texas in the 30th round. Other in-state players taken included Howard Johnson, a pitcher for Clearwater High, by the Yankees in the 23rd round; Richard Jemdra, ss-2b of Pressure On From Tribune Wires Nearly halfway through the World Soccer Cup, the pressures of involvement in the most popular single event in international sport are beginning to show in Buenos Aires. Two coaches Claudio Coutinho of Brazil and Ally MacLeod of Scotland were in danger Thursday of losing their jobs. Scots fans wrecked a restaurant in Cordoba. The surprisingly successful Austrian team asked for more money and demanded their wives be flown to join them.

Several star players succumbed to injuries and exchanges between newsmen and officials at some press briefings became increasingly snappish. The fact is the tournament is poised at a crucial moment. The euphoria and high hopes of the opening have evaporated and after slogging through 16 games, at least nine of the 16 finalists still do not know if their fate will be elimination or qualification. The unhappiest camps are those which expected to do well and have fared badly. Pre-eminent among these are Brazil, the pre-tournament favorite, and Scotland, which FIFA President Joao Have-Iange predicted would reach the final.

In fact both have played feebly, Brazil earning two ties and Scotland losing once and drawing once. Predictably, there came a report from the Brazilian camp in Mar Del Plata that Coutinho must make certain team changes or go. Scott Dye, who surrendered only one hit in 3 1-3 innings of relief, picked up the win for the Tarpons. Tampa hosts St. Pete again tonight at Al Lopez Field, 7:30, in a free night. Larry Buckle, 3-2, will pitch for the Tarpons. The Tarps need a win to keep a comfortable lead in the race for the first-half division title.

The first half of the season is over June 21 and the winner of that portion of the FSL's split season automatically qualifies for the playoffs. Tampa currently leads the division by four games. National League batters he faced, struck out 10 and walked none. The Cubs extended their division lead to one game over Philadelphia, which was idle Thursday.

The Reds, who entered the contest with a half-game lead over San Francisco in the National League West, fell percentage points behind the Giants, who also were idle. Murcer's third homer of the season came in the seventh and made it 8-1. Dave Kingman reached first on a throwing error by Dave Concepcion. Manny Trillo poked his third single of the game before Murcer hammered his shot over the right field wall. The Reds broke up the shutout in the eighth on two-out singles by Pete Rose, Ken Griffey and Joe Morgan.

Cards, 2-0 St. LOUIS (AP) Ken Reitz drove in both runs with a pair of two-out singles to give the St. Louis Cardinals a 2-0 triumph over the Atlanta Braves Thursday, tagging pitcher Preston Hanna with his first loss of the season. The 23-year-old Hanna, 4-1, lost a pitching duel to St. Louis right-hander Pete Vuckovich, 3-3, who checked the Braves on seven hits before giving way to Mark Littell with two out in the eighth.

Littell registered his first National League save. Hanna struck out seven Cards but weakened in the sixth, when George Hendrick led off with a double and scored on Reitz' hit after Keith Hernandez and Jerry Morales were retired. Two innings later, Hendrick walked, raced to third on a single by Morales and scored on Reitz' second hit. Vuckovich, who was making his second straight start following 22 previous appearances as a reliever, and Littell combined for the eighth shutout of the year by the St. Louis pitching staff.
