The Tigers also scored on a 40-yard field goal by quarterback Bobby Moreau five seconds before the end of the first half. The victory, LSU's first Southeastern Conference win this year, gave the Tigers a 2-4 season, while Kentucky is 1-4-1. The Wildcats scored on a three-yard run by Sonny Collins early in the first quarter and on a six-yard pass by Cliff Hite to split end Randy Burke' in the fourth quarter. The Tigers were held scoreless until midway through the second quarter.

LSU's first score was set up when safety Ronnie Barber intercepted a long pass thrown by quarterback Bill Tolston. The interception on the Wildcats' 31 yard line was quickly followed by a 37-yard run by Robert Dow that placed the Tigers, on Kentucky's five. Two plays later Robiskie took a handoff from quarterback dan hit Joey Walters on a 67-yard scoring pass and ran three yards for a touchdown himself, while running back Don Pester-man scored on a 20-yard run. Duke scored on its first two possessions. Fusco booted a 24-yard field goal following a 55-yard drive, and Dunn, who replaced Bob Corbett at quater-back in the middle of the next drive, scored on a four-yard touchdown run.

Clemson rebounded with three quick touchdowns on three possessions in the second quarter. Pesterman struck first on a 20-yard run that climaxed an 80-yard drive in even plays. Penn State recovered a Syracuse fumble on the Orange 20 and their quarterback, John Andress, hit Stutts in the end zone on the next play for the final score of the game. Neither Syracuse nor Joe Paterno's heavily favored Nittany Lions generated much convincing offense.

Syracuse outpassed its opponents and played them even on the ground. It was Penn State's ability to stall Syracuse's ground game and passing, chiefly due to the work of linebacker Gregg Buttle, that insured its victory.
