THE TEEEE HAUTE STAR, SATURDAY, 3EE 22,1958 THESE DAYS BY GEORGE E. SOKOLSKY UGLY OVERTONES It was bound to happen that the Supreme Court decisions concerning integration, as it is called, would have ugly overtones. Already Little Rock has become a symbolic term and is an incalculable item in world affairs. Already, within this country, the question of integration of a school system has become subordinated in many minds to the broader problem of social assimilation. The time is wrong for dissension among the American people because we face a formidable foe who is making war upon us by new methods.

And as long as the enemy limits himself to new methods, many elements among the American people do not recognize the nature of this war and believe that they can afford to pursue their ordinary problems of living. To suggest that we are at war is like saying a dirty word. Nevertheless we are at war and some of the new methods are devastating without even the appearance of shooting. One of these is divisive propaganda and to it the Communists have devoted themselves in every country. The opposition to the Negro, which is rising beyond the question of integration, is based upon a widespread opposition to racial intermarriage, which is generally termed mongrelization.

This opposition appears on both sides of the racial equation, and while there are some who prefer not to discuss it, the fact is that it needs to be discussed because it is a norm in American life. Most people, of a kind, prefer their own kind. You might relate it to the ancient dictum, "birds of a feather flock together," or you might use Professor Giddings' rather old-fashioned phrase, "community of fact is that all over the world, in every stage of civilization, those who marry 'out" are not favored. In the United States, this has been true to the degree that a number of states have laws forbidding miscegenation which is an early form of South African apartheid. Opposition to any form of inter-marriage, Catholic with Protestant, Jew with Christian, Negro and White, is normal in American life.

It used to be objectionable for a Southerner to marry a Yankee, but that was temporary and no longer exists. The normal problem between whites and blacks in the United States is not the schools but intermarriage. As anti-Negroism increases, particularly in the North and in California, anti-Catholic and anti- Semitic movements also expand. Particularly is the depth of anti-Catholicism at this particular moment. Perhaps what bothers the anti-Catholics most is their fear that a Catholic might become President of the United States.

Both Jews and Catholics are blamed for integration. The main argument against the Catholics is that their parochial schools are integrated; the argument against Jews is that the Supreme Court is dominated by Jews who favor mongrelization. I have before me a publication, "The Virginian," No. 2. This is what it says about itself: "The Virginian is one of the few publications which dare to tell the whole truth about the plot to mongrelize white America.

Each month it prints important facts which the plotters don't want you to prints them in attractive, easy-to-read style, on high quality paper. With pictures, too! Why not subscribe to the Virginian today?" The issue which I have deals with one, Leonard Schroeter, who is described as director of the Washington regional office of the Anti-Defamation League. The first page of the pamphlet is a photograph of a news item which appeared in the Oregon Journal Dec. 9, 1954. It is a report of a speech delivered by Schroeter which says many rather exaggerated things.

It needs to be pointed out that whereas the bishops can speak officially for the Catholic Church in the United States, no organization is empowered to speak officially for American Jews who have never chosen such an organization or accepted one. Nevertheless, when divisive efforts are at work, every scrap of documentation becomes important. "The Virginian" that came to me did not arrive in 1954 but in 1958 and during those years much has happened in the United States to force even a moron to grasp the fact that these divisions that are coming between us with such vehemence are dangerous. In good times, a nation can afford any kind of nonsense; in bad times, anything can be a wrecker. 1958, King Features Syndicate, Inc.) Company Answers Suit on Policy A suit filed Thursday in Superior Court No.

2 against the Prudential Insurance Company of America yesterday resulted in the issuance of a statement by Harry Hopewell, manager of the company's Terre Haute area office. The statement follows: "This is in answer to the article appearing in newspapers in this vicinity in regards to a suit to recover on an insurance policy against the Prudential Insurance Company of America, in behalf of Mrs. Mazie Johnson of 1506 Plum Street, and her husband, Virgil M. Johnson, whose death occurred Sept. 17 while on a fishing expedition on Eel River, near Bowling Green.

"Prior to the suit the Prudential did offer to pay the full face amount of insurance, plus all accumulated dividends, on the regular death benefit. The payment of this face amount and the dividends were refused by the beneficiary's attorney. "The accidental death benefit of the policy was not offered in payment, because all the medical evidence indicated that it was not an accidental death."
