fttporttr Thunday, S.pt*nb.r Siouxland conference kicks off this Friday, Sept. 6 The 1974 Siouxland Conference football season Is set to kick off on Friday, September with eight of the squads diving right Into tough conference action. All but the Akron Red Raiders will open with a conference opponent. The 1974 season will see the West Sioux Falcons competing in the conference for the first time in many years, in 1965, re-entered on a limited basis last year, and now are ready to compete on a full-time basis in all sports In 1974 75. It also will be the last year of competition In the conference for the Akron Red Raiders.

They were a charter member of the league since it was formed in 1352 and have been a member ever since. However, they have elected to join the Little Sioux Conference and will do so at the end of the summer base- ball season of 1975. Conference officials see a close conference football race this year with three schools given the best chance of capturing the title. Those three pre-aeason picks are Central Lyon, Maurice-Orange City and Sioux Center. Sioux Center was given a very slight edge by most to capture the crown with Central Lyon verjf close behind, and Maurice-Orange City as a definite contender.

Next, they grouped four schools In a virtual tie for the middle spots these were West Lyon, Rock Valley, West Sioux, and Boyden-Hull, all of these having definite "dark horse" possibilities if break right for them. Most delegated Akron and George to battle for the basement spot, but if some good young players develop fast, they may be able to move up and al- so challenge for a higher spot. The highlight game on this first Friday of action, September 6, will find two of the pre-season picks for the title battling it out. The Central Lyon Lions, coached by Dick Null, will travel to Sioux Center to take on the Warriors of Mel Tjeerdsma. They will be attempting to break the Warriors 18 game winning streak and to derail their quest for a third straightSiouxland Conference crowu.

In other Important conference contests, Rock Valley will travel to Maurice-Orange City to tangle with the Dutchmen, also a conference contender. George will host the West Lyon Wildcats, and West Sioux will travel to Hull to do battle with the Boyden-Hull Comets. The Akron Red Raiders will be hosts to the Jays from Le Mara Gehlen in a non-conference affair.
