Slutske SltAM Bt SIM SS WklTtK Princess Cruises is hosting a corporate recruitment fair on Saturday starting at 0 a m. in front of its headquarter in the Westtield Valencia Tow Center. The recniitment is not just for entry-level positions, but for up to (X) positions in 20 different departments, including accounting, finance, marketing, marine operations and purchasing.

"This event is rather unusual for us because we rarely hold these types of job fairs for niid-and upper-management positions." said Susunne Ferrull, media information specialist for Princess Cruises, The last time Princess Cniis-es hosted a fair with opportunities in middle and upper management was 2001, when the cruise giant moved its international headquarters to the Town Center from Culver City. Business Law John Shaffery Court Expands Retaliation Claims In the 2(X)6 term, the Supreme court took the additional step of articulating an expansive standard for determining what types of employer conduct, hen accompanied by a retaliatory motive, can support a cause of action for retaliation. The underlying case concerned a claim of sexual harassment, but the ruling has ramifications for all claims based on retaliation for opposing civil rights violations. As the 2006 case itself demonstrated, with the right set of facts, it is possible for a plaintiff to be successful on a claim of retaliation, even though the underlying claim of discrimination has failed. The two types of wrongful conduct are independent of one another. In this case, the plaintiff was the only woman working in the track maintenance department of See SHAFFERY, page B6 arts Crafts, cooking projects, WILL DAVIS The Signal The Big Oaks lodge, home to the new Cavi restaurant, has a history as a hangout for oldtime celebrities, such as Mary Pickford.

Lodge has history as getaway spot. By Reina V. Slutske Signal Business Writir Cavi, located in Newhall since December 2005, is expanding its business to a second location in the woods of the Angeles National Forest. It's a long, winding drive up Bouquet Canyon Road to the historic Big Oaks lodge. 'There was a feeling, since the beginning, that this place was welcoming." said Antonio Viscito, one of the partners.

The Big Oaks in itself has a tremendous history, being built before the 1920s as a stagecoach stop. It caught on as a popular place for movie stars to relax from the 1930s through the 1950s, when stars such as Mary Pickford built cabins in the forest. Its legendary history as a hangout for the stars includes rumors, such as the one about gangster "Pretty Boy" Floyd once coming in to use the phone as he was making a getaway. The lodge went through different owners, with the previous owners having The Big Oaks lodge for 27 years, and using a part of the property to train boxers such as Michael Dokes. The previous owner worked with Michael Milligan, one of the partners, at his granite company, Stone International.

When Milligan, who did granite for Cavi in Newhall, approached Viscito and business partner Tonino Cardia for the second location, they were excit- Far as long as federal law has prohibited discrimination in the workplace, it also has separately prohibited punishing, or "retaliating against," an employee who opposes the prohibited discrimination. Employment discrimination can occur on the basis of factors such as race, sex and religion. Usually, there is an anti-retaliation provision found in the same law that prohibits the underlying discrimination. There are dozens of federal statutes with anti-retaliation provisions. The policy of protecting those who object to what they perceive as unlawful discrimination is so ingrained in federal civil rights law that it has even been read into 'aws by implication, even though it was not there in black and white.

In 2005, the United States Supreme Court ruled that Title IX, which prohibits sex discrimination in educational programs or activities receiving federal financial assistance, also implicitly prohibits retaliation against individuals who oppose conduct that allegedly violates Title IX. such as wild boar and seafood. Although it is not considered traditional Italian food, Viscito. who is from Naples, Italy, said that on Italian menus, items with wild game would be found, and each area of Italy features different foods. For the weekend bar crowd, Cavi serves marinated tri-tip, hamburgers and pizzas.

Viscito's dad, Vincenzo. came out from Naples to teach the chefs how to make 12-inch, Naples-style pizzas. Milligan said the bar crowd and bikers have helped the business build up, and many bikers return to have dinner at The Big Oaks. The owners hope to expand, adding brunches for Easter, Mother's Day and during the summer months. In addition, they hope to include catering and special events, such as weddings.

Their goal is to become a staple for fine dining, like "an Italian Le Chene," Viscito said, referring to the French restaurant on Sierra Highway. 'The business plan is to make it worth the drive," Milligan said, adding that the lodge, with the' romantic backdrop of the forest and the open road make for an interesting location, not to mention its history. "It's a feeling of nostalgia," Milligan said. Cavi at the Big Oaks is located at 33101 Bouquet Canyon Road and is open Wednesday through Sunday for dinner starting at 5 p.m. Lunch is available Saturday and Sunday starting at 1 1 a.m.

The bar is open every night. For more information, call 1661)296-5656. a 1, Dow Industrials Rise as Investors Await New Signals on Inflation ed by the "opportunity to grow," Cardia said. "They saw the potential," Milligan said. However, the potential needed a little bit of work.

The bar is considered to be a popular stop for motorcycle riders on weekends, but the building especially the dining room needed work. They replaced booths from the 1960s with tables and chairs, repaired the roof and removed the boxiqg ring, where fighters were trained, to create a patio for al fresco dining. "It needed a fresh breath of air," Milligan said. They opened the bar Jan. 1, followed by the dining room two weeks ago.
