"I feel we have a major opportunity because the film industry is going through tremendous change.

"We can set this up to make us appear very enticing to the industry," said Aronson. The six standing committees, with newly named chairman are: Communications, Patti Dee; funding, Suzanne Shoemaker; events, Jennifer Dinardo; training and enhancement, Jeff Morton; marketing and public affairs, Carol Rock, and accounting and finance. Jeff Markk. Liaison person with the city will be Mike Haviland, City of Santa Clarita economic development director. Officials said the new directors were appointed by the executive committee of the chamber Board of Directors with input from the film committee.

Hereafter, members of the committee will be elected by the general membership, with committee ground rules covered in a chamber-issued brochure. The City of Santa Clarita provides nearly all the funding for the film committee, an official said. "Most cities give the film industry a hard time, which to me doesn't make a lot of sense," said Aronson. By AL FUESOCTHAL Signal Staff Writer SANTA CLARITA The Film Committee of the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce has reorganized because, officials say, there's a need to meet a "tremendous growth" of filmmaking in the Santa Clarita Valley. "We must seize the cpportiai-ity," said Marc Aronson, who represents the SCV Chamber of Commerce on the committee.

Instead of having a vertical structure, from a chairman on down, the committee will be horizontally structured with six teams, each headed by a chairman. In addition to Aronson's post, it will include a city liaison and a representative from the state's film commission. These nine people will form the directors' committee, out of which will come the chairman, a post formerly held by Ze Gonzales. "Our four purposes in reorganizing were to bring more filming to the valley: encourage more movie-related firms to relocate here; provide more jobs, although there are more employees in the film industry here than in any other field; and to support local businesses, because industry people spend a lot of money here." said Aronson. A group of Northern California winemakers and grape growers recently spent 10 days in Russia after church leaders asked for help in growing better grapes and making finer wine.

In the vineyards and wineries of the Upper Caucasus, near the Black Sea city of Krasnodar, they found antiquated winemaking equipment in an industry neglected under Communism. "It will take years to turn things around." said Hector Bedolla, 34, one of four Sonoma County wine experts in the group. "Russia went through a temperance movement in the '60s when a lot of wineries were shut down. Equipment in the wineries dates back to 196S and beyond." Economic and social reforms also have created confusion since the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991, said Bedolla, the manager of Hambrecht Peterson Vineyards in Healdsburg. "These people have been told what to do and what not to do for 75 years" Bedolla said.

Margaret Davenport, 46. wine-maker at Healdsburg Clos du Bois winery, said wines in the region are high in alcohol and sugar, comparable to cheap muscatel or port wines. The high alcohol helps the wine stay stable," Davenport said. People in the region expect their wines to be sweet and high in alcohol, she said. Davenport admits she was "horrified" by the condition of the equipment and buildings at some wineries she visited.

But Russian winemakers do remarkably well considering their poor technology. Ribbon Gutting 1U English Gleaners she said. Davenport said Russian Orthodox Church leaders want to build a winery to make good sacramental wines for communion at the region's churches. Church leaders "are concerned about the purity of the wines, much like Orthodox Jews who want wines that are kosher," she said. Joining Davenport and Bedolla on the trip to Russia were Dane Petersen, 49, vineyard manager at Silver Oak Cellars, Geyserville, and Ronald Brown, 44, manager and winemaker at Diamond Oaks Vineyards winery in Ooverdale.

The mission was coordinated by Father Thomas Devereaux, pastor of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Healdsburg. Davenport and Bedolla said their group and St John's parish are raising money to bring a Russian Orthodox pnest and oenology professor to Sonoma County to observe this fall's grape harvest Cyanamid will sell portion to German firm WAYNE, NJ (AP) American Cyanamid Co. said Friday it has agreed to sell its wound management business to its partner in a European joint venture.
