Davl- to his Jekyl and Hyde record of making my own mistakes. It takes a while to learn the tricks of a new position and everything went wrong." Cox was a lost soul last spring. All winter he had read that Brooklyn was going to sell him to Chicago In a deal for First Baseman Ed Waitkus. Of course, it never happened. Then he was shifted to a new position.

In April, Durocher delegated one of his coaches to sound out Billy on playing second base. The answer was "No, thank you." After Shotton became manager in July, Cox's play picked up. But he wound up with his worst season since he came out of the high school ranks to sign with Harrisburg, back in 1940. NCAA Haseball Meet at Wichita last year to prove his claim. "I WON IS games last year, but captured only two in the first half of the season," he said.

"Then I got going. From July 5 on, I won 13 games. Had I permit was third with 104. Confidence of a new-found ability to play third base and to rrnke up for last year's sorry performance, 20-year-old is a new man. He wants to play ball for Manager Burt Shot-ton. "A man who can't play ball for Shotton ran't play for anybody," said Cox. "He's the best manager I ever played under." Then, after a moment's hesitation, he added: "I like Frankie Frisch, too." OMISSION by Cox of Leo Durocher's name may or may not have been intentional.

There was little love lost between the the ex-Pittsburgh shortstop and Lippy Leo. "Everything- was wrong last year," said Cox, who hit only .249, lowest of his brief career; "I never played third base Wore. Mr. Rickey (President Branch Rickey) told me I would play third when I signed my contract at Brooklyn. Some of the largest spring flights of migratory birds in recent years have been daily winging their way across the state of Nebraska enroute to their seasonal homes in the north. Coming from their winter resort areas along the southern coastal and gulf states and Mexico, the flocks coming in waves and consisting of most every species of duck and geese are pausing briefly; resting and feeding on rivers and ponds thruout the state.

HEAVIEST reported concentration of ducks and geese is along the Platte river from Grand Island on west to Lexington. A large flight of sand-hill crane has been observed between Kearney and Lexington. An estimated 3,000 pin tall, mallard and red bead ducks landed at Capitol Beach lake near Lincoln Friday and were joined by approximately another 2.000 before Saturday morning. To date, the state game commission has no reported trouble with Nebraskans violating regulations in quest of the plentiful birds during the closed season. The commission has shifted some of its personnel and is using airplanes in an effort to protect and keep track of the flocks.

It's reasonable to suppose that I won't repeat that first half flop, because J'm a much better pitcher now." I'p to July 4 last year, Barney was a prize bust.

By the end of the season, he was generally acclaimed as one of the best pitchers in baseball. During the first three months, big Barney was able to pitch but one complete game. In the last three, he completed 14. Anions; his better efforts were a no-hitter, a one-hitter, a three-hitter, and four five-hitters. Things- looked so black for Barney, that on July 2, after Rex almost had his brains knocked out by the New York Giants, Manager Leo Durocher barked: "The kid just hasn't got it, I tell you.
