24 Lawlessness has an existent in Missouri as well asllinois, and Carthage the county seat of Jasper, is in an uproar. Mrs. Peter Orr, a wealthy young grass widow, resides in the vicinity. The Rev. James F.

Hardin, who also bears the title of Mayor, is a neighbor. Sometime since he was openly charged with swindling some orphan children, arraigned before the church council, and dismissed from the fold. Lately be made a pastoral call in the widow's bedchamber at an unseemly hour, and was twice shot by Orr, the bullets taking effect in his band and mouth. He was carried home, and by careful nursing recovered. A scheme was then concocted to deprive the widow of her property.

H. L. Nicholson, a well-known character, induced her to intrut claims to him for collection, being endorsed by Harden and a young man named Robinson. She placed her business affairs in Nicholson's hands, and executed Botes of hand for $3,500, to be paid when the estate was settled. The notes were disposed of at a reasonable discount by the attorney to make matters more binding they were ostensibly sold.

The Hon. W. H. Phelps learning of the transaction, and actin? for Mrs. Orr, sought the party holding the notes and on being shown them, put them in his pocket.

On Saturday night, the family of Colonel Phelps were aronsed by a mob. Phelps answered the summons. Her husband's presence was demanded, and as be did not show up, the band became infuriated. Young Robinson presented a loaded revolver at Mrs. Phelps' head, and demanded to know the whereabouts of her husband.

Ezra Miller, an estima ble citizen, hearing the outcry, rushed to tbe. house and dealt Robinson a horrible-blow. Revolvers were then drawn, and. firfng commenced. Colonel Phelps, well armed, here appeared, and aided by friends who had gathered to the rescue, the rioters were dispersed.

Joe Wilder, one of tbe gang, -has been arrested and placed in Jail, charged witn a deadly assault. Colonel Phelps was also arrested for the alleged destruction of the notes, and furnished bail in the sum of $50,000. Nicholson was also arrested for carrying concealed weapons. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Robinson, who is still at large. The party composing the mob were Robin-inson, Nicholson, Hardin, Joe Wilder, John Morris Smith, of Medoc, and eight or ten others.

Carthage has sever been so excited, and it is predicted that tbe above is only the Commencement of a series of bloody encounters. "'Colonel Phelps is a member of tbe State Legislature, and much respected by the community in which he resides. FATAL O.CAIRIL. St. Locis, Mo Aug.
