Special to The Times "CBS Happy New Year, America" is the theme for this year's New Year's Eve celebration. The 90-minute special will herald the arrival of the 1980s at colorful and festive locations across the country and the music will range from disco to Dixieland, from ballroom to pop Monday at 11:30 p.m. on Channel 13.

Paul Anka will host from the Grand Ballroom of the Las Vegas Hilton in Nevada. Also featured from the hotel will be orchestra leader Les Brown and his Band of Renown, which will perform a salute to the "big band" era of the 1930s and 1940s with music in the style of Glenn Miller, Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey, Harry James and other "big band" greats. The program will cut away from Las Vegas to in on other New Year's Eve festivities in the East and the South. In New Orleans, trumpeter At Hirt and his Big Swing Band from Dixieland will perform live from the New Orleans Marriott Hotel. There also will be live coverage from New York City, where 1980 will be ushered in in traditional style with a remote broadcast from Times Square.

Nearly one-million revelers throng together in the heart of the Broadway theater district annually to view the famous dropping of the globe. Also in New York, three-time Grammy Award-winner Natalie Cole hosts an elaborate disco party complete with disco roller skaters from the famed Copacabana nightclub. Singercomposer Anka has been an international superstar for more than two decades. As a teen-age idol, Anka composed such hits for himself as "Diana" and "Put You Head on My Shoulder." More recently, his hit compositions have included The Times of Your Life," "You're Having My Baby," and the song that has become Frank Sinatra's trademark, "My Way." Anka has earned 15 gold records. Hirt is the personification of great Dixieland.

He Catherine Bach of 'The Dukes of Hazzard' will appear in CBS' New Year's Eve. has performed around the world, but he's most closely linked with New Orleans. He began to play as a teen-ager, got sidetracked by World War II, then attained international fame in the 1950s. Cole is one of contemporary music's most exciting female vocalists. Beginning with "Inseparable" in 1975, all five of her past record albums have been certified gold, and two have gone on to platinum.

She has won three Grammy Awards one as best new artist (1976) and two as best rhythm and blues female artist (1976, 1977).
