THE TAMPA TIMES, Friday, August 15, 1980 2-C Sun rises on Tampa Bay horizon; WBL team has hall rolling to be a great asset to this franchise when he can devote his total energies to it," said Mosca. "Once Bill gets into town, we'll be ready to go. He should be here anytime within the next week to three weeks." The problem is that Mosca was expecting Byrne to arrive five weeks ago, but the owner hasn't been able to extricate himself from the confines of the league commissionership. Considering that Mosca has scheduled a free agent tryout for Sept. 1 and pre-season promotion and ticket selling will play a large part in the eventual success or failure of the franchise, Byrne doesn't have a whole lot of time to show up and get the ball rolling.

While Byrne continues to tie up hisi loose ends in New York, no successor is in sight. In the interim, even Mosca has toned down his enthusiasm a bit "I'm getting a little impatient There's no question about that," said Mosca. That's really my feeling, but I do understand his position. You can't just walk out of a $9 or $10 million operation. On the other hand, we're anxious to get started here.

"All these delays have hurt our credibility," Mosca admitted, "but it's something we can overcome. Once we get started, everything should be fine." General Manager Gary Brown and Mosca must also begin signing some players soon. To that end, Mosca reports the Sun "is very close" to coming to terms with high-scoring free agent Liz Silcott and is also trying to acquire forward Cindy Brogdon from New Orleans. Silcott was the WBL's second-leading scorer last year, averaging 30.2 points per game with San Francisco. She has expressed a keen interest in playing for Tampa Bay, according to Mosca.

Brogdon is from the University of Tennessee and didn't play in the WBL last year so she could retain her amateur status for the Olympics. Mosca said a trade is in the works with New Orleans, which owns the rights to her. leave New York and come to Tampa in order to officially open the Sun for business. Plans for such a move have been in the works for a long time, but Byrne is still in New York handling league matters. Tom Mosca, the coach of the franchise, has to agree to terms with Bryne, sign a contract and officially resign as a school teacher and basketball coach at Robinson High School.

Mosca says his signing is imminent, delayed only by Byrne's absence and a slight difference of opinion regarding his salary. And, of course, the Sun will need a few players. All of this must happen soon for the Sun to be able to put a team on the floor for its WBL opener Dec. 5 against the St. Louis Streak.

Mosca insists steps are being taken to handle these matters and the Sun's future will be just as bright with success as its past has been clouded with mystery. The whole problem, it seems, is that Byrne hasn't been around to set up shop. "Bill Byrne founded this league and it's going By DAVE RENBARGER Times Sports Writer More than five months ago, the official word was released the Women's Basketball Leauge was coming to the Tampa Bay area. Since then, the local franchise has been like a figment of somebody's imagination, occasionally making headlines with various announcements but never really doing anything to indicate that the ladies would be bouncing basketballs here come December. Now it finally looks as if the Tampa Bay Sun is ready to creep above the horizon.

The previously nameless WBL franchise was officially identified as the Tampa Bay Sun Wednesday and with the name, the new team also released a 36-game schedule. With the announcement, the franchise received a much-needed and long-delayed shot of credibility in the wake of a list of broken promises. However, a few other details remain before the first ball can be pumped up. Such as: Bill Byrne, the owner of the team who currently serves as the WBL commissioner, has to The team is also negotiating with the 10 players it drafted last June. "Hopefully, we'll have some of these people signed by next week," said Mosca.

"ThatVour No. 1 priority right now. We want them to be here for the tryout." The Sun has a 36-game schedule, but the 18 home dates could be a problem because of the delays in the construction of the University of South Florida's Sun Dome. The Sun had confirmed all of its game dates at the Sun Dome, but new delays have jeopardized a four-game, season-opening homestand in December. "All I can say about that is the same thing (USF Coach Lee) Rose has said," Mosca said.

"It's going to be a big factor for us to get situated on a home-court basis. We very much want to play in the Dome, but if we can't open there, we've got to line up a backup facility." Alternative arenas under consideration, depending on their availability, are the St. Petersburg Bayfront Center, Curtis Hixon Hall and the Hillsborough Community College gym.
