THE ENQUIRER CINCINNATI, FRIDAY, MARCH 27. 1914 15 DISSATISFIED With Norwood Returns On Personal Property Are Distriet Tax Assessors- Complaint From Columbia Township. District: Assessors Doran and McCarthy are dissatisfied with the early, reports of the appraisement of personal property in Norwood. Yesterday the District As-1 seasorg a the three Deputy Assessors working in Norwood asking the matter. with The Assessors state that comparisons of the Norwood returns make a poor showing for Norwood, The letter contained the following comparative statement showing the percentage of increases in the returns and the percentage of new returns: Percent- Percentage of age of increase, returns, Norwood 39 25 St.

70 210 Cheviot 52 430 Elmwood 60 61 Newtown 73 200 Reading 633 145 Mt. 69 04 The District Tax Assessors yesterday received a letter from a taxpayer of Columbia Township in which it was stated that many valuations in this neighborhood are too low. The writer declared that while his appraisement was "rather he was willing to pay, the tax provishns, other valuations were equalized. The District Assessors were much pleased with some of the sentiment expressed in the letter and they decided to make the correspondence public without disclosing the taxpayer's name. The notifled that the situation Columbia writer, Township would receive the careful attention of board.

a The letter was in part as "I beg leave to call your to folliention the fact that the appraisement of my real estate is rather high in comparison with many others, and, in fact, I have more than once been advised to appear before your board and try to have the matter properly adjusted. -Now, as a matter of fact, I do not think that my valuation is too high, but I am sure that there are many others that are too low. If I. request that my valuation be cut down. and others added to in the same amount, no real benefit would thereby accrue to the taxpayers of Columbia Township.

"In view of the present financial strin-1 gency, which is quite a hardship and which may prevent necessary improvements, I would respectfully request you to leave my assessment as it is, and raise other valuations which are immoderaately low. I believe that if this is done all over the township our funds will be ample for all the improvements needed. have talked over with other taxpayers, and the above recommendation seems to be the general sentiment. So long as each one pays his share of the tax, and the rights of others are taken into due consideration with perfect fairness, everybody ought to be satisfled." FLY SWATTERS To Be Sold For Benefit of Antitubercuiosis League. In connection with its annual campaign for funds, the Antituberculosis League is planning a unique educational District organizations are now being formed throughout the city for the purof placing one or more fly.

swatters pose in every home of Cincinnati. In this way one practical method of carrying out some of the league's health mottoes will be offered to every family. The league's nurse has been preaching health features to the children of the public and parochial schools and the league's lecturers have been talking to church, lodges, factory workers, along the same lines. Now they can put into practice one of the things taught by' all joining the "swat the fly" campaign. The evidence has been accumulating for some time that the house fly is not only an undesirable companion in the home.

but is a dangerous carrier of diseases of several kinds, including tuberus, culosis. While the sale of these fly swatters will be at a very small sum, it will give an opportunity to everyone, rich or poor, to contribute a few cents toward the common crusade against tuberculosis in which all are interested, but to which it is ficult for some to give, except through a method such as this. All and organizations that the interested exterminating the house fly clubs, are asked to communicate with the league at in order that all may work together as far as possible. Gor- REAL ESTATE AND BUILDING Fully $300,000 -will be spent by Builder S. D. Cooper in the development of the Billing homestead properly, Fairview Heights, sold late yesterday through Building. The was consummated decaf Gould, Atlas Bank er office hours and is to be formally ratifled. this morning.

Under the terms of the sale the buyer is not to get possession of the property, the most important tract from a residential standpoint in that section of the city, under four or 'six weeks. This stipulation was insisted upon by Mrs. Henriette Billing, the owner, in order to her to arrange her plans for the future. It is intimated that Mrs. Billing intends to live In New York City.

Howard E. Wurlitzer, of the Rudolph Wurlitzer is a son-in-law of Mrs. Billing. The exact consideration could not be at $50,000. Her family is reported to learned.

Mrs. Billing held the property have spent close to $75,000 in the residential improvements and the development of the tract. Much time and money was spent in beautifying the ground. In some places beds of cactus completely cover the earth, forming a carpet. One street which Mr.

Cooper will run through the tract will wipe out of existence two beds of unusual spring flowers. The property is located at the northwest corner of University court and Straight street, in the upper end of Fair-' view Heights, The tract overlooks Clifton and a large portion of the Mill Creek Valley and Price Hill. It has a frontage of 693 feet on University court and 489 feet on Straight street. One thoroughfare will give the buyer some 400 feet of additional building space. There are two modern residences on the place which will be placed on the The rest of the tract will be improved with duplex apartment buildings.

It is proposed to construct at least 25 of these, making it the only settlement of the kind in the city. None of the buildings, it is understood, will cost less than $10,000. Mr. Cooper has engaged the services of an expert engineer who has been instructed to lay out the grounds and the building sites in such a manner as to least interfere with the trees and bushes. a All the lots are to have a frontage of about 50 feet.

joint owners, buying the holding for $15,025. The property was sold under orders of the Court by Deputy Sheriff Metcalfe in the case 'of Frederick Broermann, vs. Lizzie Kessling et al. The price was $13,333 33. According to seemingly reliable infor-1 mation from Chicago the Union Savings Bank and Trust Company has awarded to Wilke Hogue, of that city, the general contract for the construction of the addition to the property at the northwest corner of Fourth and Wainut streets.

The architects are D. H. Burman also of Chicago. President Clifford Wright, of the bank, last evening stated: instructed the architects a month ago to award the contract at a certain figure, If it has bene let we have not been informed." Builders Smith Heitmeyer are reported to have 'bought 175 feet on the upper side of Madison road, just opposite the entrance to the residence of former United States Senator Foraker, east of Grandin, road. Cleneay, Nourse Huntington, who were reported to have had charge of the sale, late yesterday had nothing to say in connection with the deal The land is said to be worth about $10,000.

Quite an expensive duplex apartment is to be built on the east side of Burnet, about feet north of Rockdale, in Avondale, as the result of a sale made yesterday by Broker Albert G. Erkenbrecher. The property, 60 feet front, which was owned by Clara E. Webb, of New Jersey, was sold to John Quartors, who expects to improve the lot.
