The case went to trial at: 2 o'clock Wednesday. The witnesses were all present and the court room was filled with visitors. Nine witnesses were examined for the prosecution Wednesday, viz: Master Mra. 10. Alexander erson, Olof Miller, Anderson, Miss Mary Lunkeman, Jus.

Nelson, Rosa Thurston, Mike Johnson, Alfred Nelson, and Miss May Thurston, R. Moore, Q. A. Overmyer, J. 'I.

Barrett. District Attorney White, assisted by J. E. Pemberton of Mendocino represents the People, and J. A.

Cooper is for the defense. The defense are aiming to establish the plea of insanity. The PRESS has full notes of the trial so far, but refrains from giving them this week, believing it in the intereat of justice and tuxpayers. The case will probably go to the jury today. Fruit Samples.

The PRESS acknowledges receipt of fine fruit samples from Megars. Dashiels of Potter Valley, Dr. Brown of Philo, and Cook of Boonville. The fair and the fruit samples sent to our office, together with what we have observed throughout the county gives al high conception of the possibilitica of Mendocino county for fruit production, Let the good work of planting go 013. Have we a health officer! CYCLONE. Mendocino Fruit Exhibit. The Mendocino County fruit exhibit taken from the recent fair here, and placed in the rooms of the State Board of Trade by W. P. Thomas, shows up to fine advantage, and not only compares favorably, in all respects, but in some surpasses anything there.

The Burger- Dimoulty. In the Burger-Horst difficulty Burger had Horst arrested for battery. He was arrained in Justice Sullivan's Court and plend not guilty. The trial was get for 26th inst. with bonds at $300.

Fionio. On Inst Sunday, six merry young people from Boonville went to Soda Springs for il picnic. They were: Misses Dora Crow, Luella and Della Finnoy, and Olive Fry, and Messre. G. T.

Brown, and David Crow. The apring is about fifteen miles from Boonville on the road to Navarro. It is an accepted fact that the place, with its wild and beautiful scenery, is very nttrnctive. It is becoming, every year, more popular as a summer resort. The party were conveyed thence in consented vehicle, drawn by four lively ammals.

All were in the conveyance, and ready to start by 6:30 A. so the team bounded awny. The lines were handled by the skillful hands of Mr. David Crow. Excellent time WitH made, and the ride rendered very enjoyable.

The plensure-seekers were well pleased with their stay on the grounds, and after viewing and admiring the scenery to their satisfaction, luncheon was spread. This had been provided by some of the girls, and by the merchant, Mr. Brown, from his store. The dinner Wil8 apprecinted by all. Being so late, this pienic was probably the closing event of the season, but it was aL benutiful day; and those present feel ante in saying that it was 118 thoroughly enjoyed aS any of those preceding it.

In the evening all returned home fooling grateful for the pleasure they had been afforded by the brother and sister who organized party. The Truck System. The condition of the lumbermen and woodmen of Mendocino county is about to be investigated by Labor Commissioner Waltz. The abuses to be corrected are the truck system, by which the employes are compelled to trade at the company's stores, paying exorbitant prices, and being paid their wages in checks due in several months which they usually get discounted the Company. The investigation is sadly needed, and it is to be hoped the evils are soon to be corrected.

Mendocino Beacon Items. C. W. Brown has been appointed Post-master at Philo, vice C. Prather.

The new Stearn's band mill at. Ugal will probably start up abont the middle of the present month. Peter Riley reecived a broken leg at the Garcia on Monday of last week by SOnIC timber falling on him. The Postoflice at Manchester is now in charge of M. Sherwood, who was appointed to succeed W.

E. Umphray. Unlawful Dezainer. A decision WaS reached in the Superior Court last week in the case of Sophronia Patten va. Emma A.

Weller. It was a case of unlawful detainer. The defendants had rented a place of the plaintiff, and the suit was brought to dispossess them. The decision was for plaintiff, and the parties have fire days to leave. Notice to Subseribers.

The list will be concluded next week. T. A. Templeton feels quite proud of having carried off. the prize for the beat rondster team in Twelvth Agricultural Distriot, and he may justly feel so, for his beautiful blacks are daisies.

The Rev. T. A. Atkinson has been changed by Bishop Huygood from Chico to Selma, Fresno Co. by his own request.

Atkinson will preach his farewell sermon next Sabbath morn ing. J. B. Morse states that he is too anperannuated to ride a bicyele on his collection tonra, but ho gets there just the same. He is training one of his boys to ride the wheel, another to write short hand, and a third to operate the type- and will soon have a collection agency 011 a big scale.

His office is with Justice Sullivan, and close proximity to a Justice's office may make it decidedly interesting for tardy debtors. Mra. M. P. Sawtella, M.

D. of San Francisco, and dunghter, are in Ukiah this week. Mra. Sawtelle lectured Tuesday evening in the Christian Church on "Physiology as applied to self culture and Health." Her lecture WAR 8 good one and. well received.

She is the wathor of "The Heroine of a California novel wide merit. The book, while being an interesting novel, at morals io which few authors would assume to point. It has a force and vigor which appeala the strong mind. A good book which cau be profitably read by all. TEMPLETON still in the lead.

After adjournment last week the Supervisors went to look at the new road from sherwood to Ft Bragg. H. B. Fine left Tuesday to attend the San Francisoo business college. Hubert will make friends wherever he goes.

A. M. Bentley of Covelo, went to San Franciaco to-day to attend the annual session of the Grand Lodge F. A. M.

Taxpayers are beginning to call for their receipts. About one-sixtieth of the taxes of the county were colleoted last wook. J. G. Short brought down from Round Valley last week 80 head of beef cattle which he shipped to Healdsburg butchers.

M. J. Byrnes came up on the train Tuesday on his way home to Mondocino from San Francisco. He staid over one night in Ukiah. The saw mill of Amos Snuffin which W29 burned several months ago is being rebuilt on the old site, and will be ready for outting the coming winter.
