OBITUARIES Phil Mergen Graduates WAYNE, Neb. Phil Mergen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clem Mergen, Estherville, graduated from Wayne State College, Wayne, in ceremonies May 1. Mergen graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in sociology and a minor in psychology.

Governor Ray Proclaims Custodian Week DES MOINES Governor Robert Ray has proclaimed the week of May 16-22 'as Custodian Week in Iowa to recognize those men and women who spend their working day cleaning, sanitizing and maintaining the environment in which we work. Custodian week is sponsored by the Iowa Association of Custodians and Assistants, who have members throughout the state and 11 active chapters. Martens has been an attorney since graduation from the University of Iowa's Law School in May, 1972 and passing the Iowa Bar examination in June, 1972.

He was associated with a U.S. District Judge from 1972 to 1974 and with the Fitzgibbons Brothers Law Firm, Estherville, since. 1972. John and Sue Martens have two children, Brent, 4, and Scott, 3. William McGrann Wallingford Marine Ends Training SAN DIEGO, Calif.

Marine Private William R. McGrann, son of Carol Reeves, Wallingford, has completed recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. During the 11-week training cycle, he learned the basics of battlefield survival, was introduced to the typical daily routine that he will experience during his enlistment and studied the personal and professional standards traditionally exhibited by Marines. McGrann participated in an active physical conditioning program and gained proficiency in a variety of military skills, including first aid, rifle marksmanship and close order drill. Teamwork and self discipline were emphasized throughout the training cycle.

Illness forced her to become a resident of Hilltop House. She was a member of the Spirit Lake Methodist Church, the women's society and Eastern Star Lodge. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs.

Ray (Ruth) Mitchel, Brainerd, Mrs. Earl (Naomi) Bueltel, Terril, and Mrs. Delbert (Ellen) Currie, Schaller; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and three brothers. Lily Bird Jacobson GRAETTINGER Services for Lily Bird Jacobson, 72, Graettinger, will be 2 p.m.

Saturday at the Bethel Lutheran Church, Graettinger, with Pastor O.J. Reitz officiating. Interment will be in High Lake Cemetery. Mrs. Jacobson died Wednesday, May 11, 1977, at her home in Graettinger.

She was born July 10, 1904, at Graettinger, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Sandvig. She received her education in schools in Graettinger and Cedar Rapids, where she obtained a teaching certificate. Mrs.

Jacobson taught for many years before her marriage. She was married to Blanchard Jacobson at Graettinger on March 15, 1936. The couple farmed in Emmet County before retiring and moving to Graettinger. Mrs. Jacobson was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church, Graettinger, and active in the ALCW and other church activities.

She is survived by her husband, Blanchard; three sons, David Jacobson, Graettinger, Donald Jacobson, Minneapolis, and Richard Jacobson, Lakefield, three sisters, Mrs. R.S. (Florence) Knutsen, Estherville, Mrs. Ordine (Adeline) Olson, Estherville, and Mrs. Leland (Erlene) Aanonson, Denver.

and one brother, Gordon Sandvig, Estherville. Mrs. Jacobson was preceded in death by a daughter, her parents and two brothers. Friends may call at Fuhrman Funeral Home, Graettinger, until noon Saturday, when the body will be taken to the church. and Mrs. Andrew Brown, he was born Feb. 24, 1902, near Gruver. He received his education in Center Township schools and, on July 21, 1927, was married to Zelma Ditsworth at Jackson, Minn. Mr.

Brown farmed south of Gruver, on the farm where he was born, his entire life. He also served as a member of the Gruver School's Board of Education. He is survived by his wife, Zelma; three sons, LeRoy Brown, Des Moines, David Brown, Spencer, and Ronald Brown, Gruver; two daughters, Mrs. Rosemarie Williams, Hermantown, and Mrs. Kathleen Hewitt, Fridley, nine grandchildren; one great grandchild; brother, Chester Brown, Estherville; and four sisters, Mrs.

Iva Pennington, Plainfield, Mrs. Carol Vavra, Chicago, Mrs. Mildred Whaley, Chicago, and Mrs. Marjorie Wratten, Estherville. Mr.

Brown was preceded in death by one son, Russell Brown, his parents, a half-brother and two sisters. Friends may call at Fuhrman Funeral Home until time of services Saturday. Adelia Carnahan SPIRIT: LAKE Services for Adelia M. Carnahan, 71, Spirit Lake, were held Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Spirit Lake, with interment in the Superior cemetery. Mrs.

Carnahan was born Sept. 6, 1905, at Estherville, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Westbrook. She graduated from Estherville High School in 1922.
