B4 THE SIGNAL. Monday, December 24, 2001 Entertainment MAMatlial Andy Warhol exhibit coming to L.A. 'Fellowship' lords over weekend box-office as No. 1 i i 1 'sssssssssssssssiaWsiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa LOS ANGELES (AP) The first major retrospective of Andy Warhol's art in a decade will make its only North American stop in Los Angeles, it was announced Friday. The "Andy Warhol Retrospective" will feature more than 150 paintings, drawings and sculptures by the late Pop Art icon, including his self-portraits and depictions of Marilyn Monroe and Campbell's soup cans.

The retrospective will run from May 25 until Aug. 18 at the downtown Museum of Contemporary Art. "This extraordinary exhibition reveals the extent and profound depth of Warhol's achievement," said Jeremy Strick, museum director. The last major American exhibition was at New York's Museum of Modern Art in 1989. The exhibition, which currently is in Europe, brings together the complete series of the Thirteen Most Wanted Men for the first time in 35 years.

Another highlight is Warhol's "Disaster" series, which includes "Suicide," "Car Crash," "Electric Chair," and "Race Riot." Also featured will be unpublished black-and-white drawings that Warhol created in Pittsburgh and New York between 1942 and 1960. Comprised of works in both public and private collections, the restrospective was organized by Associstod PrBSS Jeremy Strick, right, the Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and Los Angeles Mayor Jim Hahn hold a poster announcing the biggest Andy Warhol ret-" rospective in the United States for a decade on Friday. ,7 "Lord of the Rings" did not break any major box-office records. Its three-hour running time and a crowded marketplace of holiday films limited the number of screenings theaters could squeeze in. The film did have the top three-day opening ever for a movie in December, beating the previous best set two weeks ago by "Ocean's Eleven." Critics have raved about "Lord of the Rings," and the movie has caught strong buzz for a best-picture nomination and other Oscar attention.

"It's one of those films where critical acclaim and mass popularity have converged, and that's a very rare thing," said box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Exhibitor Relations. "It's really captured a lot of people's imagination, critics and moviegoers alike." Studios expect big business at theaters for the coming week once people finish last-minute shopping and other Christmas preoccupations. That bodes especially well for "Lord of the Rings" and family films such as "Jimmy Neutron" and "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." With a total of $263.2 million in just over five weeks, "Harry Potter" should become the year's top-grossing film in the next few days, passing 'the $267.7 million taken in -Shrek." "Harry Potter" should be in the $300 million range by year's end, said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner which released the movie. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at North American theaters, according to Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc.

Final figures will be released Wednesday. $250,000 to bring the exhibit to. Los Angeles but it could bring in as much as $130 million in r. spending from visitors, according' to the city's Convention and' Visitors Bureau. The bureau will spend $1 lion to advertise the exhibition' the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin and curated by Heiner Bastian, who also is curator of the Erich Marx collection in Berlin.

It has been on display in Germany since October and will travel to the Tate Modern in London before arriving in Los Angeles. "The exhibit will emphasize that Los Angeles is an art center, where creativity and ingenuity thrive," said Mayor James Hahn, who remembered seeing the last Warhol exhibit in Los Angeles, which was more than 30 years ago. The city pledged about LOS ANGELES (AP) Hobbits were lords of the box office as the opening chapter of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy took in $45.3 million Friday to Sunday for an easy No. 1 debut.

"The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" which opened Wednesday also grossed nearly $28 million in its first two days. The film's five-day total was $73.1 million in the United States and Canada, according to studio estimates Sunday. The saga of Middle-earth and a quest to destroy a ring of power that threatens all creation should top $100 million when it finishes its first week on Christmas Day, said David Tuckerman, head of distribution for New Line Cinema, which released the film. The movie also raked in $60 million in its first five days in 15 other countries. "With the fantasy elements and the mythological elements mixed in at this time of the 'year, especially with" every-, thing that has been going on in the world, I think people look forward to being transported to place like this," said Rolf Mittweg, New Line president of worldwide marketing and distribution.

"Ocean's Eleven" remained the No. 2 movie for a second straight weekend, grossing 14.6 million. The animated family- adventure "Jimmy TfeTiTr6hT Boy Genius" opened in third place with $14 "Vanilla Sky," last weekend's No. 1 film, fell to fourth place with $12.1 million. "How High," with rappers Method Man and Redman as potheads at Harvard, debuted at No.

5 with $7.6 million. 0 Playing in 3,359 theaters, "Lodpf: 13,471 a cine-W riHow High" had the weekend's second-best average among wide-release films, $6,003 in 1,266 theaters. Two other new films had weak openings. "The Majestic," starring Jim Carrey as a blacklisted, amnesiac screenwriter in the 1950s, was No. 8 with $5 million.

Tim Allen's "Joe Somebody," about a meek tech geek challenged by the office bully, debuted in ninth place with $3.7 million. In limited release, Ron Howard's "A Beautiful Mind" had a strong debut, grossing $365,000 in 1 1 theaters for a average. Starring Russell Crowe as schizophrenic math genius John Nash, the movie expands to about 500 theaters Christmas Day. Hollywood group asks Ali to film announcement reviews the final concept, Boonshaft said. Ali's spokeswoman, Jill not; immediately return telephone told The New York NTimes, which first reported the Ali plan in Sunday's editions, that the ex-boxer "definitely wants to do that" but was waiting for the details of the project before making an agreement.

"Ali's name kept coming up when we considered people who are credible, well known around the world and can deliver the1 message that this is not a war on Islam but a war on terrorism," Boonshaft said. The public service announcement would be the first project created by Hollywood 911 for overseas consumption. The group, overseen by the Motion Picture Association of America, has dispatched entertainers and filmed messages to Americans at home and serving abroad since its formation last month after a meeting with Karl Rove, a senior adviser to President Bush. LOS ANGELES (AP) A Hollywood entertainment "Industry group is recruiting Muhamniad Ali to film a publics-service' announcement Explaining America's war on terrorism to Muslims around the The boxer, who converted to Islam in the 1960s and refused to serve in the military when drafted during the Vietnam war, has been asked to film a one-minute spot to be aired on international networks, said Hope Boonshaft, executive vice president of external affairs for Sony Pictures Entertainment. "He has agreed in concept," said Boonshaft, who heads the international committee of what is known as the Hollywood 91 1 group.

The organization includes studio executives, producers, directors and writers trying to aid the war effort. Final details on the content of the video have not been worked out. A final agreement is not expected until the 59-year-old Ali Ali appeared on a Sept. 21 entertainment telethon to raise money for attack victims and their families. Boonshaft said that appearance had an impact on his choice for the video.

During the telethon, Ali told the "Islam is peace. It's against killing, murdef, and the terrorists, and the people doing that in the name of Islam are wrong. And if I had a chance, I'd do something about it." The announcement Would be designed to air in several translations over networks like Al Jazeera, the Middle East Broadcasting Centre and the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation, but the stations have not yet been contacted by the Hollywood group. The group hopes the video will be fift-ished by late January. A director has yet Jp be chosen but Boonshaft said it may include scenes of Ali's trip to Mecca or footage from some of his fights.
