The Traveler WEDNESDAY CAMBRIDGE AUG. CITY, 18, IND. 1771 11 Ramblin' at Random by Ron Richard After studying several sets of figures maintained by The Traveler sports staff and diving head-long into news releases distributed by the Cincinnati Reds publicity department, we have arrived at the conclusion that the biggest problem Facing the Reds is the season's too short. Of course, it could be Sparky Anderson's boys waited too long to get started, Whatever the reason, time appears to be running out. Going back to April when the Reds got off to a bad start, dropping their first four games, the month didn't get a whole lot better as they finished with an 8-12 record.

Only a four-game winning streak, with four victories out of their five games, saved the Reds from an even worse fate. Still looking for the power that carried them into the World the previous year, the Reds posted a 12-16 record through May. A two-game winning streak was the best they could muster, and even that was offset by a four game losing streak including a sweep of a three-game series by league-leading San Francisco. The month of June started out like it was go- stated at the beginning, the season looks too short for the Reds in 1971. too late even for a miracle finish like that of the old New York Giants.

Post 169 Had Plenty of Good Hitters; Some Even Hit Good Mike Griggs, with a whopping .416 mark, topped eight of the 19 batters who hit .300 or better for Lawrence Bertsch Port: American Legion baseball team this past season. Griggs, also one of pitchers, rapped out 30 hits in the team's leading 72 times at bat, including one homer, a triple and three doubles. Dane Bolden, who joined the team late, finished with a .363 average; Danny Watson, Rick Burton, Jim Hunnientt, Phil ConMark Robbins, .308, in and Mike Lee, .303. deciMike King was involved 10 ley, pitching winning six and losing four, for the best record among starting pitchers. Dane Bolden, 1-0, sions, and Ken Campbell, 2-0, didn't usually figure in the regular pitching rotation.

Toby Ladd, finishing 2-6, fanned 33 opposing batters in 54 innings, followed by Griggs (2-2) 29; Steve Vance (3-2) 27; Campbell and King, each 2-3, and Mike Lee and Mike Mc Whorter, each 1-1, fanning 13. Post 169 fell to Richmond in sectional tourney play and ended the season, 23-21. ing to be the worst as the Chicago Cubs swept a 3-game set, leaving them 20-32 on the year. Now 12 games down on the loss side of the ledger, the Reds began to pick up momentum with several two-game winning streaks, one three-game and one four game. They ended the month 16-15, the first time they won more games than they lost.

As the July schedule unfolded, somebody on the Reds, if not all of them, forgot what they had been doing right in June and proceeded to drop seven of the first eight games they played. They dropped from only eight below the .500 mark of 13 to 14. Only a hot-streak where they won 10 kept them from tumbling all the way to the cellar in the standings. They ended the month, 13-16. Through Aug.

11, the Reds were 6-4, their best single month start of the season. The month is still young, even if the season isn't, and if the Reds keep up their present pace they just may be in an upward climb in the standings.
