It did Hot take him long to dress and then be extended a greeting to the chorus. And it was a most pleasant evening. There was singing, billiards, games, and some nice gifts were presented. Refreshments were servd and at a reasonable hour the party retired, Mr, Rogers assuring them that, the event was one he would not soon forget. Mr.

The conclusion arrived at, and it was also the opinion of Fire Marshal Cape, was 'that 'the fire resulted from spontaneous combustion under the stairway.

The janitor said there was nothing under the stairway to start a fire that way, except a quantity of new waste. There were a number of oil cans there, but no oil in them. Some wooden boxes were also stored there. ESTIMATES OF LOSS. Mr.

Peterson, at a roujh guess, estimated the loss at from $3,000 to $7,000, while Fire Marshal Cape states it will not amount to over or ft.000. On the loss there is an insurant- of $10,800, on the building and furniture Capital and Surplus, S60O.O0O.O0. General Office: N. Y. Life Minneapolis.

Residents in the Jefferson school district appear to blame the janitor for the fire last night, at any rate they are circulating a petition today asking that he ba removed. The janitor states that there were no combustibles under the steps and that he was in no way, shape or manner careless.

Investigations are to. be made. This afternoon School Commissioner Judd and others commenced cleaning up the debris in the lower part of the building. At 2:30 o'clock this afternoon fire again broke out at the school, being discovered in the rafters overhead in the first floor hallway. A stream of water was played on the blaze from the school line of hose and it was put out.

Evidently a spark had been smouldering since last night.
