I. 1913. P. H. CONNOLLY, G.

W. ORENIER. I J. BLESSINGER. When Judge William Smleding opened up the municipal court on Labor day morning he was faced by a sorry looking- bunch of citizens, most of whom had tumbled off the water wagon or committed minor offenses and had been picked up by the police.

James Riley, a stranger in the city, was found at the corner of State street and Peck avenue, liquor having fired his brain to such an extent that he used obscene language and wanted to fight the whole population, six at a time. He was fined S3 and costs or ten days in Jail. Oeorge DeGrue, a colored man, who had Just been released from serving a short sentence in the county Jail, was arrested on charge of intoxication. He tried to hike away, but failed. He rather denied the charge and his case was adjourned unlit 9 o'clock this morning.

REMINISCENCES To the Editor of The Racine Journal-News: I hereby send an old timer about a traveler in Wisconsin trying to purchase land sixty years ago. Will be thankful to you If you will find space for this In your valuable paper. In June 1853. my father Christian Schlegel landed at Milwaukee together with his family coming up from Buffalo on the propeller Samson. At that time Milwaukee citizens were progressive.

We did not dock at a pier, but our boat got into the Milwaukee harbor, and in going up to the Fast Water street bridge, the Samson got stuck, but managed to clear "herself and we stopped east of the bridge on the south side of the river and where freight was unloaded, a warehouse being there. The SamsTm also then, crossed over to the north side of the river and unloaded goods, among same being a large safe; may have been for pioneer Juneau to secure his money for safe keeping? I well -remember while entering the harbor. I could see when looking from, tha, deck, to the south, nothing but swamp 'with here and there a shanty roof sticking out. Looking north west, across the river from, the souths side -of the warehouse above mentioned I saw an engine switching ears along the river bank. Father being informed that work was to be had at Racine, the Racine, Mississippi railroad being built, we came to Racine where father received employment on said road working in the nnv Oat MIT otatlnnl tip in past Of I 1 "i Corliss and receiving a dollar a day and paying two dollars per week for board.

But father, being a mountain farmer from Swltierland preferred farming and decided to purchase government land which could be purchased at $1.25 per acre, but none such could be had around this section, we being informed that such land could i vrinnsnto 1uat nrfmq I isvsusiii from La Crosse at the south of then La Crlsson along the Mississippi. It must have been where Brownsville row stands. The same summer In July father and two agents decided to make the trip and investigate said lands. There being no railroad between Chicago and Milwaukee, they had to take the steamboat to Milwaukee, thence the only railroad in Wisconsin from Milwaukee to Madison, thence travel on foot to Frairie du Chean, thence with boat to La Crosse, and transfer over to La Crlsson. After arriving at their destination they were Informed that said government land lay nearby to the soath, but was not yet on the market.

In the morning they entered said land and found same to consist af heavy growth of timber. They also came across many snakes, among them some large ones. One of the. company had it in for the snakes making short work of them. My father and companions traveled south from there, their only compass being the sun and found nothing but woods in their surrounding, finally a small opening appeared 'and in the midst stood a small log house and around same a small clearing fenced In with vegetable growing.

It was a lone man's cabin. The proprietor Just came out of his yard with a bunch over his shoulder on which hung a large snake both ends reaching to the ground which he had killed. Mr father and his two companions went to find out from this lone 'man what course to take to get out of the endless woods again back tn clvilUallon, but as he could not understand Oer-Ptn and they no Knglih they received no information and forward they traveled the sun lowering itself so they had to make up Ihoir minds to camp In these woods over night and start In the morning again. Darkness began to set in and all at once they heard a dog bark in the distance ahead of them. This ne'ws gave them fresh courage and forward it went and by shouting finally they reached the edge of a river.

They repeated their shouting and a man across the river inquired in German what the trouble was and they answered him that they were lost in the woods and would be thankful to bim if he would take them across the river and shelter them over night and in the morning show them a way out of the wilderness so as to enable them to return home. The gentleman answered requesting them to wait and that he would help them over. Soon after he appeared paddling along In a holl-w three Celling them that he could only take one across at a time. My fathre beig the last one to cross he noticed at once that this gentleman was a countryman of his and from the tarn township. The Joy of my father was great for such an unexpected meetinsr and hospitality.

This Mr. Breusch had purchased land along this river upwards a bluff, had built himself a log house, and saw mill and Just was building a dam across said river. 'H promised mv father that he would to hlrr wbfr.evpr Un-tle Fam put said land on the market.
