Tuesday, February 14,1984 Reagan peddles peace plan to Egytian WASHINGTON (UPI) President Reagan met with Egyptian President Hoshi Mubarak today, pursuing an effort to line up moderate Arab support for his stalled Middle East peace plan. Reagan and the Egyptian leader met in the Oval Office arid pointedly discussed the weather in Washington, California and Cairo rather than the volatile situation in Lebanon during a picture-taking session watched by reporters. Jordan's King Hussein, who met with Reagan for 90 minutes Monday, was to join the president arid Mubarak for more talks and lunch today. Sitting in on Reagan's session with Mubarak were Secretary of George Shultz, national security adviser Robert McFarlane and Nicholas Veliotes, U.S.

ambassador to Egypt. Hussein and Mubarak have strongly stressed their view that the Palestinian problem is the root cause of the decades-old turbulence in the Middle East, and until it resolved, peace will remain elusive in the region. An administration official told reporters that the U.S. military presence in Lebanon "had become a national obsession" that im- eded The overall peace process. With the larines now being withdrawn to ships offshore, he added, "It may be that the boil has been lanced." Deputy press secretary Larry Speakes said Reagan has received a Pentagon plan for phased withdraw! of the Marines from Beirut to the ships, and it may be announced by midweek.

"In these times of trial, disillusionment would be easy," Reagan said in bidding farewell to Hussein. "But my meeting (today) with King Hussein has reaffirmed the need that the good and decent people of this world can and will work together, and that progress can be made toward the perplexing problem of peace in the Middle East." Reagan said Monday the administration began an internal study that led to the decision to move the Marines offshore after the Oct. 23 bombing of the U.S. military headquarters in Beirut in which 241 servicemen were killed.
