Passenger arrivals by steamers on Paget Sound departures by two to one, as will be seen in the official table elsewhere appearing. Arrivals overland exoeed the departures in like rates. It is a safe estimate that an average of one thousand persons per month have tame to Puget Sound during the last year, and that not to exceed live hundred Kr month have gone includ( actual gains and losses only, and not movements to and fro of onr own people.

An absolute gain of six thousand residents in this section in a single year, of six thousand thousand in the whole a greater growth thanwe have heretofore enjoyed. The business of the Telegraph Company has greatly tnoreased of late, at this point. How different the condition of affairs now from that of a few years ago.

Then the Puget Sound and British Columbia business was very unprofitable. The Company gave up that in British Columbia, aud would also have given that np here had they not been guaranteed a certain amount of trade by opr citizens. Merchants nnd were called upon for subscriptions, intended to reach an amount great enough to warrant keeping up the system. Now the Puget Sound branch pays handsomely. DiLiY.

SEATTLE DAILY POST-INTELLIGENCER, FRIDAY, AUGUST 11. 1882. TU NET mr ESTKT PTCET POST TOWXSETD, W. Aug. 3.1882.

Port Townsend. the shire town of Jefferson county, like its sister towns of Pucet Sound, is beautiful for situation. Olympia with i's twelve-mile vista of blue water visible from Capitol liill; New Taooma, with its uiagnilicent panorama stretching away through valley and foothills to Mount Banier; and Seattle, with its splendid sweeps of forest, bay, mountain and valley, visible from its terraced hills, may each claim equality; but when the artist in words arises whose province it shall be fitly to paint all these beautiful pictures he will hesitate Ion? before he awards the palm of superiority to either. From the table land upon which the residencefportion of Port Townsend is built, looking to the north on a clear day, Mount Baker looms up, if not with all'the majesty of Rainier as seen from Johnson's Point. New Tacoma or other favorable situations, at least with a striking grandeur peculiarly its own.

Around its flanking buttresses "Chaos seems come Titanic, fire sc.trred rocks seem piled in inextricable con fusion around its base and half way up its rugged and suggest Arctic desolation. The eye of the gazer finds a oertain relief, turning eastward, it marks the clean-cut but still snowcrowned crests of the Cascade range mellowed by distance and tempered by the far reaching vista of wood and water. In the southeast Hainier. lifting its white crown from an emerald sea adds new beauties to the picture, whil to the south the white crests of lb Olympic Mountains look down upon the descending foothills over which they light and tling a glamour which the most skillful wielder of pen, pencil or brush might strive in vain to reproduoo. At the base of all, the beautiful bay upon the shores of which the town is located sleeps placidly, and mirrors all the lovely Take it altogether the praises which the Port Townsend people lavish ujion their surroundings are well deserved, and your correspondent endorses them as above, not grudgingly but with willing mind and free hand.

The town has its institutions, public and private, of which 1 shall proceed to speak. THE CUSTOM HOnsE. The headquarters of the Puget Sound U. S. Collection District is located here.

Mr.

Harned informs me that the customs receipts for the fiscal year ending Jnne 30. 1882, amounts in round numbers to TOT HOSPITAL. Another institution of Port Townaend is Dr. T.T. Minor's hospital, which occupies a commanding Bite on the brow of the hill, affording a splendid view and an abnndnnoe of pore and salubrious air.

The main building is 100x32 feet in dimensions, two stories high, and oan accommodate fifty patients. Three smaller building serve as kitchen, dining room, wash room and fever ward. The average number of patients is aboat 175 per year, exclusive of the oonnty poor, who are under the Doctor's charge. By a contract with the P. Government, the hospital receives patients from the naval and revenue marine service, and is als open to disabled seamen of other nationalities sent there by foreign consuls.

The oharge for food, room and nursing for each pttient is oue dollar per day. Dr. F. W. Mead, surgeon U.

S. Marine Hospital service, has eharge of the branch of the hospital devoted to "our sick sailors." For the fiscal year ending Jane 30. 1880. he treated ltiti patients, and for the year just closed, 172- roar towwsxd uwmiu coxroii. In December last, some ot the publio spirited citizens of Port Townsend, realising the importance of manufactures to any and every town, organized a company with the above title with a capital stock of $56,000, Dr.

Minor being elected President. The result so fir is seen inltbe almost completed erectiou of a substantial building of 40x220 feet in dimensions. Firatotass machinery is now being pnt in ptaoe. The engine will have a twenty-two inch cylinder, with twenty-eight inches stroke, and the will cot 30.000 feet of lumber in ten hoars. mill will have a six-roll planer and a Hobb's edger.

The length of the building adapts it pleasingly to catting timber for shin building, which will be made a specialty. for a boom yard to bold 5,000,000 feet are in pragma. nroar eocxn ir wiirn compact. Port Townsend is tbs hsadqnsrtsrs of Ac above named company, oooneoting pany has been in existence ten years, with a capital stock of f25.000. Dr.

T. T. Miner is President. Quite recently Gen. Hazen telegraphed that material had been shipped for a signal service lino connecting Port Angeles with Tattooch Island light honse' Cape Flattery I.

The work may be expected to be completed this fall, and will donbtless prove of great advantace to the commercial interests of the whole Northwest. WEST SIDE BAILKOAD. The West Side Puget Sound Railroad Company has also its place of business here. It is a road as yet in embryo, which contemplates connecting this point with Tenino. Of this company Dr.

Minor is also President, as also President of the iny above mentioned. On the subject of the said road connection with the outer world, or more properly speaking, the inner world, for Port Townsend is emphatically on the outside, so to speak, the people hereabouts are secure and confident in their belief that it will come in good time, and waste very little of the latter commodity in useless repinings or speculations, but pursue the even tenor of their way. and make the best of surrounding circumstances. RCELIC SCHOOLS. Port Townsend has one graded school, with Grammar.

Intermediate and Primary departments. Daily average attendance 130. Mr. li. C.

Kerr been retained as Principal for the ensuing term. A FIVE STOBE. C. C. Bartlett A wholesale and retail dealers of this place, have a right to boast of one of the finest, if not the finest store house north of Sir.

It is 56x100 feet in outer diuien sions, two stories high, the first 18 feet in the dear, the second 14 feet. It will cost, when completed, about the upper story being reserved for offices and rooms. This enterprising firm do an extensive wholesale trade with the islands of the San Juan archipelago, Chimacum valley.

Neah Bay, New Dnnginess, Qailleute, Alaska and other points. Few more complete or better assorted stocks than theirs aie to be seen anywhere, while their spacious storerooms and warehouses are well worth an inspection. Strength and durability seem to have been aimed at in the construction of their new building, and the desired result seems to have been obtained. HOTELS.
