POST INTELLIGENCES. THE BK UIV-H tilt. IIUIItK hDI KTttl. The Canadians aro iking snob a considerable and profitable basinets of ready-made house manufacture that it seems strange that Americans, who hive the repatatioo for seizing new opportnnities for money setting do not branoh in this direction more extensively. True it is that the rapid settlement of the Canadian Northwest has stimulated the inventive genius over the line to devise some way to provide the shelterless new-goers on the prairie of the new country with anil the knock down plan of preparation and hipment has proved to be the mo feasible and quickest way to uieet the exigency, Illustrative of the manner this industry is progressing, it is mentioned in the London, Ontario, AdvrtiMr, that the Truaxes' planing-mill at Walker ton, is turning oat material for readymade houses at a rapid rate.

for a whole row of houses can be filled in a few days, and it is not uncommon to see an entire street for Brandon or a block for Winnipeg sent out on a train twenty or thirty dsvs after the ord. has been received. Daring the past season Messrs. Truax shipped two hundred and nineteen cars of knock-down house material to the Northwest. One the partners in the firm accompame- Moh train, and superintends the put ting up of the houses.

Sometimes houses aro ordered by telegraph in thi fashion "What cm you furnish me .1 tidy cottage for, £2x4o feet, with window and veranda Next sprint; the enthusiastic Louse-builders expect to reoeive orders for entire villager, something after this style "What if your lowest figure for five stores, two wagon and two blacksmith shops, one Methodist and one Presbyterian church twenty-five oottages, a town hall and a look-up, to be delivered on or be fori Jaly Ist Orders have been received for twenty-one houses to put up in Brandon next spring. The freight ration these houses from Walkerton to Chicago is S4O a car; from Chicago to Minneapolis, a car. The the balance of the way is enormous, owing to the lack of competition, the oost of a medium oar through from the stait to Winnipeg being $361. The large ones used by the Truaxes cost more. a We look for most thriving industry of this character ou the Pacific slope at an early day.

The abundance of lum ber ou the lower Columbia river, on Paget Sound and lturrard Inlet, aud the establishment of great wood-work iug industries, will, on completion of the trauscontiuental roads and tin oheapening of transportation, be means of building up an immense traf fic in ready made houses for the tree less region between the Cascades and Rooky Mountains. It will be cheaper, of course, to ship only such material as may be ncoossaiy, and it can be done with a house as well as with a sewing maohiue or passenger coach. It will not be surprisiug to witness the inauguration of this traffic ere the clohe of 1883. IIKCKATED, On the sth inHt the Dakotnns sus tainod a defeat in Congress that pats theui out of tbe field for tbo remainder of the session. They put forward then division bill instead of tbuir admission bill, and w'ule they got very nearly a two-thirds to the House, they were just enough short to be beat.

The Democrats could staud one Republican State of Dakota, but couldn't stand two. "Take oil youi mask," shouted Mr. Kandull. "1 dou't like this fighting under cover. 1 tell member on this side," turning Impressively to those around him, "thai this bill moans the itduiinsion of two Btates." The bill wus a mere pretext to open the way for two Republican This Dakota action bears out the posi tion we have taken right along in com paring Washington with Dakota.

The oases were not at all aualogous. We have an older and rioher Territory, more stable aud prosperous population, a constitution already adopted, a united people, and are fully fitted for State government. Dakota, ou tho contrary, hasn't vtanted admission without dm aud, divided, it uot equal to Washington, certainly uot ith North Idaho annexed. It is uot for us to be disoouraged at Dakota's failure. A press dispatoh gives additional par tioulars as below: WASHINGTON, Feb.

It is generally believed that the motion was defeated by the over-auxiety of its friends to dis cuss it. The Democrats, undsr the leadership of Sam Randall, were will ing to allow a vole without discussion but the great eagerness of Mr. Orout ot Vermont, who had charge of the bill, Mr. Burrows of Michigan, chairman ot the Committee on Territories, aud or two other Republicans, to make speeches, preoipitated a bitter dieousaion, which resulted lu the fail ure of the motion.

Before tt.e motion was made, at least tweuty-fivc Demo orstio members promised to vote for it This would have given the requisite two-thirds majority to suspeud the rales, bat a siugle senteuoe uttered bv Kandall was sufficient to solidifv Democrats and cause them to vote" in it body against the motion, aud no amount of speech-making on the HeputMican side could cause a break iu the orauo ranks. There is no other road that has ai mioh agricultural aal mineral wealth tributary to it, and. Toasequently, that will hare as important towns on IW line. It also seems that, in cmseq-ience of the comparative small amount of snowfall upon its line, the design of its managers is to shorten the time taken to cross the continent. In the endeavor to avoid the consequences of this quick time of the Northern Pacific upon the Union Pacific, Mr. Vanderbilt is already scheming.

The telegraph reports the object of trip to the Pacific, as follows The true inwardness of Mr. Vanderbilt's trip to Pacific is said to be make arrangements for expediting express trains across the continent. Ihe plan is to shorten the time between Sew York and San Francisco thirty-six hours, making the trip in four and a half days. The Northern Pacific proposes to do better than this between the Atlantic and the Pacific when it shall have completed its line aud ballasted its throughout the spin of the continent. This is evidently a scheme to head the Northern Pacific off.

The new Chehalis paper in its second namljer, has discovered that "Gould's Goal" is on Gray's Harbor, at the mouth of Chehalis river. Mr. Goald no doabt will be obliged to the editor, bat will perhaps feel aggrieved at the paper for making his discovery publicly known informing him of it, and giving him a change to make a corner on town lots. It is said the new of Honry Villard in New York will cost a million dollars, and will be one of finest private houses the world. The steamships Walla Walla and Willamette will both be det lined longer than at first expected, on account of the land slide near the May's creek trestle, on the line of the Columbia and Paget Sound liailroad Company. The supposition that Win. There are indications that the Bell Telephone Company is preparing to enter the telegraph busine-s, and to that end is obtaining the rights of local companies. The recent observations made on the planet of Venus during ber transit across the sun appear to confirm the impression derived froui the last transit in 1H74, that she has an atmosphere not less deuse than our owu, and aqueous vapor and cloud within that atmos phere. This conclusion would have grieved the Professor Whe well, who, in his ingenious easay to disprove the plurality of inhabited worlds, took for granted that "we discern no traces of a gaseous or watery atmosphere surrounding her (Venus)," and built on this negative evidence one of his arguments to prove that in the whole universe the earth is not improbably the only habitable globe. Professor Wbewail did his best to show that the earth held a very singular place in what might be a very unique solar system; that it oocupied what he called the "temperate zone of its owu sun's system, and that there is no particular reason to sappoie that any other sun has planetary attendants at all. In order to make out the singular position of the earth in its owu sun's system. Professor Whewell was compelled to make the most of tne intensity of the light and heat in Mercury ana Venus, aud the most, again, of the comparative oold of Mars, lu point of fact, however, it is probable that a very slight modification of our human if any structural modifications at all of that organization were enable oreatures wf the same general structure and habits as man to live with ease in either of the planets nearest to the earth, Mars, which should, ratter paribtu, be colder aud darker, or in Venus, which should, curler paribus, be liguter and hotter than the earth.

We know, to some extent, the configuration of the contments in Mars, and our astronomers have at times watched tbe area of the polar snows of that planet increasing with the approach of winter, and dwindling with the approach of summer. Of Venus we know inuoh less, the lutense brightness of her redeoted light being a very unfavorable condition for minute observation. But the apparently clear evidence for an atmosphere of a good deal of density, and for the presence of a cloud and aqueous vapor in that atmosphere, disposes completely of the late Professor Whewell's assumption that no creature resembling man, now has, or could ever have had. his abode there. There now seems no reason to doubt tbat in Venus the conditions of physical existence are such that either there now may be there, or may have been, or may be in future, a being whose physical existence might, like that of man and animal natures nearest to man, exist under something closely approaching to those of terrestrial life.

The length of the day in Venas is nearly the same, tbe weight of any given mass is nearly the sauie. the atmospheric conditions are probably not very different from our own; the only material differences being probably the length of the year, which is uot very much above the half of say. about seven months instead of twelveaud tbe amount of light and unless mitigated by special atmospheric conditions, as they easily might be, would probably be twice as intense as terrestrial light and heat. We insist oil this analogy, however, only for the sake of thoee who. like the late Dr.

Whewell, made the argument from analogy so all-important, though in relation to a question on which, as it appears to the argument from Analogy his realty a very bearing indeed. there is no reason in the world whv spirit aal beings, much more like to as in tbeir thoughts than is at all probable that birds and tortoises are like to us in their thoughts, should not exist the pure other, in the hottest rWmes of the sun, in the dimness of the darkeat recesses of spioe, in the heat of- the volcano or in the depth of the ocean. Ignore the reasoning from analogv. aud we oan hardly have a less secure basis for reasoning where observation is limited, as it is in this to one minute corner of tbe universe, aud we shall fina no more reason why we should confine the Creator's power to working within conditions closely resembling oar own than there is why we should assume that lie will work at all in regions where wo have no evidenoe of that work. Ho. POST I.VTELUOESCEB Short Line road, by avoiding the Burnt river has gained a irm it victorv, one that will tell, when built, in dollars and cents. By running down Snake river it tips the Aasotm, tae best country tributary to Lewiston. Tnen below that the Alpowi. the the Pataha, Two Canyon, Whetstone hollow and the Eureka flit, all of which are heavy grain-growing districts.

Then, too, the line will not compete with any other line now in progress, or any that may be batlt in the future. This, the writer thinks, is an important achievement, and one that will soon be appreciated after it shall have been completed. Way traffic is an important consideration in the building of railroads, and intelligent action in this regard has been taken by this choice of routes. It furnis ties an outlet to a large scope of oountry that has been hitherto neglected and wholly left out in the cold. The enterprising citizens of Lewiston have keenly felt this neglect and have labored assidaouslv to procure railroad connection by way of the Lolo pass, whioh had to be abandoned on aoooant of its impracticability.

A of the Colombia has to be made somewhere below the month of Snake river. To cross above Wallula would cive a more direct line toward Paget Sound. There is a long canyon running in a northwesterly direction that empties into the Yakima river some 10 miles above its mouth; this would give the road an easy grade down on the Yakima, and bv crossing the Collumbia some 6or 7 miles above Wallula would be almost on a direct line in the course the line would want to go. In all this distance there would be no clashing with the routes of any of the projected roads. From the horn of the Yakima there woald be a choice of rontes: one wonld lis up the Yakima river, through the reservation, and the other woald oross the Yakima river, and run east of the Uattlesnak? mountains to within 8 or 10 miles of Priest rapids, then by taking up Cold Creek to its head and over into Seloh Valley; from thence go down the said valley into the Yakima canyon, at or near the month of Squaw creek; from thence it would only be some 3or 4 miles into the Kittitas vallev.

This is the most direct route that could be taken and the one that woald have fewer obstacles to overcame, and would be mou permanent when made. After reacning Kittitas the country is open and either side of the Yakima can be taken. Further than this the writer is not ninch acquainted. But the roost favorable pass through the Cascade mountains is reached. Such is the opinion of OLD PROSPECT.
