And yet the demand for houses oontinnea far in exceaa of the supply. Our report of the Chinese bill in Congress is miserably mixed and incomplete, but aa we got it so from the telegraph company and ooald get no more, we hope to be excused by oar readers. The nsw City Council of Olympia has reduced the pay "of its clerk from $240 to SIOO par annum; its treasurer from $l2O to 100; and its marshal from S3O per month and $1 50 per day, to S6O per month without per diem. There would have been a magnificent display of aurora borealia here last Sunday night bad the sky been clear or clouds. As it was the night was as light as though a fall moon were shining, and the phenomenon created much remark.

John Phinney's wonud is of a more serious nature than was at first thought, and there is a possibility it may end fa tally. It was inflicted by himself accidentally. A strike among the longshoremen at Victoria was the oaase of the unusual detention of the Geo. W. Elder at that point last week. The men wanted GO cents per hour for day work, as they were receiving for work at night, and the company's agent refused to aocede to the demand.

As the ship had 760 tons of freight on board for that place, its unloading by the ship's crew alone was nooessanly slow work, and caused her detention a day and a half over the usual time. Oar streets were thronged last Sunday as they are on only few oocasions. The oorning of the steamer from San Francisco, with her crew and passen gers made an addition to our permanent and transient population of souls, which addded to that of the town all drawn out by the beauty of the day, kept a moving throng upon the streets that must have numbered at no time leas than fifteen hundred persons.
