Obituaries I -J Bird program Local author Kn Brock will present a free program based on his new book, "Birds of the Indiana Dunes," at 7:30 Tuesday at Thomas Library, Chesterton. Brock, associate professor of geology at Indiana University Northwest, Gary, will show slides of a variety of Duneland birds and discuss their migration, lifestyle and appearance. "Birds of the Indiana Dunes," Eublished in March by Indiana fniversity Press, is a finding guide and checklist to 337 species of birds that have been recorded in the Dunes area. The book also contains an essay on the geological makeup of the Dunes and Lake Michigan's, effect on bird migration.

Museum closed The Old Jail Museum of Society of Porter County will be closed through Dec. 8, according to curator Bertha Stalbaum, The museum will reopen Dec. 9 on a regular schedule of 24 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Group tours are avail able by appointment.

Helping needy Employees of the Valparaiso Kmart store are providing 20 families with baskets of food for traditional Thanksgiving dinners. The store on Tuesday will participate in a nationwide Kmart Good News Program, with employees collecting and packaging canned goods and other food items. The food baskets will contain turkey, potatoes, stuffing mix, vegetables, bread, pumpkin pies ana other items. Store manager Kay Grenier said other area 4-businesses and organizations can donate food to sponsor addi- tional families. The Salvation Army is identi- tying needy families and will deliver the food baskets.

He was born April 30, 1897 in Porter County, the son of John and Christina (Kaiser) Brickner. On March 14, 1925 he married Hattie Ertsman who died In 1982. He retired from U.S. Steel in 1961. and was a member of St.

Peter Lutheran Church Portage. Surviving are two daughters, Gloria Peek of Minnesota and Marlene Cochran of Valparaiso; a son Marvin of Valparaiso; and nine grandchildren. executive, died Sunday in Porter Memorial Hospital. He was born Dec. 3, 1898 in Albuduerque, N.M., the son of VanNess and Cora (Field) Crosby. His great-grandparents were Morgan and Philura Crosby whose home still stands at 252 Crosby Ave. On June 30, 1922 in Chicago he married Dorothy Dennis who died in February 1979: He was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist, American Legion Charles Pratt Post 94, Veterans of World War I.

Frank Knight Frank Knight, former owner-of Knight's Blueberry farm near Wheatfield, died Sunday in an Arizona' nursing home where he was a patient five years. His survives. Dorothy Kroft BOONE GROVE Dorothy L. Kroft, 86, a Boone Grove resident 38 years, died Sunday in Willows Rehabilitation Center, Valparaiso, after an extended illness. She was born Nov.

2, 1900 in Lafayette. On June 9, 1926 in 'Fowler she married Ralph Kroft who died in 1981. She was a retired Boone Grove School teacher and was a member of Boone Grove Christian Church, Hebron Order of Eastern Star and Daughters of the American Revolution. Surviving are two sons, Bernard of Kouts and John of Valparaiso; a sister, Christina Durham of Arizona; and eight grandchildren. Services 1:30 p.m.

8, 1918 in Michigan City, the daughter of Raymond and Martha (Hagenow) Lubs. On Sept. 19, 1951 in Westville, she married Elmer P. Landgrebe who survives. Also surviving are two brothers, Raymond and Elmer Lubs of Westville.

Deaths elsewhere Boyd Reutebuch STARKE COUNTY State police are investigating the apparent suicide of a Starke County school principal. The body of Boyd Reutebuch, principal of Winamac Elementary School, was dis- covered by his family, upon their return from church Sunday morning, police said. Reutebuch, 55, died of an apparently self-inflicted gun- shot wound about 10:30 a.m., police said. Family members told police Reutebuch had been despondent for some time. Scatman Crothers LOS ANGELES (AP) -Actor Scatman Crothers, 76, whose roles included a telepath in "The Shining" and a magical senior citizen in "Twilight Zone: The Movie," died of cancer Saturday.

Besides his regular role on the NBC-TV series "Chico and the Man" from 1974 to 1978, Crothers also appeared on "Hill Street Blues' Elzire Dionne NORTH BAY, Ontario (AP) Elzire Dionne, 77, mother of the quintuplets whose birth and survival astounded the world 52 years ago, died Saturday. Mrs. Dionne was 25 when she gave birth to five identical girls Annette, Cecile, Yvonne, Emilie and Marie -r in the family's isolated log farmhouse in nearby Callander on May 28, 1934. The babies' combined weight was 13 pounds, 6 ounces, and odds against their surviving were Judged astronomical. But all lived to become adults.

Douhan also worked with his staff to develop a computerized system that allows quick retrieval of law enforcement and case incident reports.
