LINCOLN SUNDAY JOURNAL AND STAR January 2, 1949 Culbertson On Contract certain South in a recent duplicate game thought that it was a bad guess which had brought him "botom. on the 'His feeling was not entirely warranted! West, dealer. North-South vulnerable. NORTH. 32 8 8 10 5 86542 WEST.

EAST 9 7 AK 974 10 5 A 6 9 8 4 4073 A 10 9 SOUTH. A QJ 10 86 5 4 6 2 At almost every table this WES the bidding: East South West North Pass Pass 8 hearts spades Pass Pass 4 hearts spades Double Pass Pass Pass In some cases West made matters fairly easy for declarer by cashing his top hearts and then shifting to a club. When East turned up with the club ace, these declarers could be pretty sure that West had the diamond ace' for his opening bid, and therefore it was marked for them to enter dummy and let the diamond jack ride thru East for a finesse. Thus, these NorthSouth teams came out with a 200 point penalty, which 'was about as good as they could expect in view of South's freak holding. At other tables, the West players were not so accommodating--after cashing two hearts shifted to a trump.

And at the table where the "unlucky" South sat, the play proceeded as follows: South took the trump shift in his own hand, went to dummy via a trump to the king, and devoted all of his attention to guessing the diamond position. In the obvious hope that East had the diamond ace, declarer gave diamothe chance to cover jack with the queen, but when East played low, South went right up with the diamond king. His loss of two tricks, two diamonds and one club gave him the aforesaid zero on the board. The declarer should not have put his guessing ability to such a test! He should have laid down the blank club king from his own hand to discover where that ace lay--and then he should have a pretty good idea where the diamond ace was! P.T.A. The Queen of Bermuda, famous "honeyship, will return to the -Bermuda service on Feb. 12 after being restored as a luxury liner. Its return will evoke memories the minds of more than 375,000 passengers who sailed on the "Queen" before she went into war service.

THE LINER had a gallant war record in the service of the royal British navy, patrolling, as an auxiliary cruiser, the South Atlantic and the Antarctic, where raiders were lurking, and making rendezvous with supply ships. Later, when the navy was built to full strength, the "Queen" was reconverted to a troop carrier and transported troops to India, Burma, Africa and the middle east. Now, after more than a year and a half in drydock in north of England, where the Queen of Bermuda underwent a complete transformation, she is returning to service as one of the most luxurious vessels afloat. THE PEOPLE of Bermuda are eagerly looking forward to the return of the "Queen" at the beginning of the season. They hope it will give a pronounced lift to their tourist trade, which is the lifeblood of the island.
