Judge Pivarnik placed Van Cleef on probation after the defendant pleaded guilty and the prosecutor and the victim of the crime, Van Cleef's former employer, recommended probation. Van Cleef has made full restitution, said Judge Pivarnik. Van Cleef and another employe against whom charges are still pending, were charged in May with theft after they were caught by plant protection at Midwest Steel Corp. while stealing tin anodes. The tin anodes, weighing 85 pounds each, had a value of $1,224.

The anodes were taken from the electrolytic line, where the men were employes, and taken to the lakeshore on Midwest's property and buried by the men, who told police they planned to come back in a boat and pick up the pure tin anodes.
