10 THE DATLY INTER OCEAN, THUKSDAT MORNING, MABCII 10, 1891 TWELVE PAGES. Dll. GOODBUAKL" TJie Noteil oidarxeoa Lalet ta Rest at Clinton with Imposing Hi- Ceremonies. Bites of the Grand 'Army and the Knights Templar Performed at the Grave. An Intimate Friend of Logan, and the Han.

Who Beard jUcPiierson's Last Words. SOLDIER AND CIVILIAN. CUXTOX, I1L, March Tetegrmm. The funeral of Christopher Goodbrake ih conducted from the Methodist Episcopal Church here this afternoon with, a solemn pomp neTor equaled in Clinton. The burial ceremonies of the Grana Army, the Masons, and- Knighta Templar cotninandery were all performed at the grave.

Store were dosed and fla were displayed at half mast. Knights Templar from Urban. Blooming-ton, Decatur, If attoon, Springfield, and Monnt Pulaski participated. Special trains were ran from Deoatar and Farmer City. Goodwin's band accompanied the Docatnr Templars.

The death of es-TJnited States Burgeon Goodbrake, who passed away at his home in Clinton Monday night, about 13 o'clock, will be sad news to many an ex-soldier, and is a loss that will be felt in Masonic and other circles. Dr. Goodbraka was born 74 years ago, in a small Tillage near Stuitgart, Germany. When yet a child his parents came to America, settling in Pennsylvania. He begin the practice of medioine in Portsmouth, Ohio, but soon thereafter came to Clinton, where he has lived since 1317.

He volunteered in the Twentieth Illinois Infantry, becamo surgeon of the regiment, and in two years was made chief of staff in the third dirision of the Sevonteenth Army Corps, a position which he held till the close of the war. Dr. Goodbraka served side by side with Generals Logan and Leggett, and during the war a friendship grew np between the former and the Doctor that increased with age. With Surgeon Goodbraka hundreds of entertaining reminiscences of the great volunteer soldier are bnried There is perhaps no soldier who knew General Logan as intimately The doctor in the first engagement of the Twentieth Regiment in Fredericktown wss the only surgeon left on the field after the eDomy had retreated. The regiment afterward participated in the battles of Charles-town, Forts Henry and Douelson, Bhiloh, Corinth and Briton's Lane where Surgeon Goodbrake distinguished himself by helping the commanding officers rally his diaspiritea troops and drive an enemy treble their number from tho field.

He was at Jackson, Champion Hill, Vicksburg and Atlanta. His position as chief of surgeons in the Third Division brought him into close acquaintance with General McPherson, whom he personally knew well. There is no donbi that Dr. Goodbrake heard the last words ever spoken by that hero save those addressed to an attendant, for be had passed the General in the ravine but a few moments before the fatal shot. The famous old "Moan," a horse that so many of the soldiers of the Third Division remember, was sent home and survived tho war many years.

This horao always accompanied the Doctor. His splendid library is well stocked with msny souvonirs of the war. and until his last sickness he never tired of rehearsing the thrilling sceuea through which be had passed. He was years sinoe a contributor of standing to tho medical journals, and his cases have been published in German, French, and Kus-sian medical journals. His fame as a surgeon made his services of great value.

He founded the first De Witt County medical society, and became a life member of the Illinois Medical Society, and long ago was made a member of the American Medical Association. He was an ex-president of the Bush Medical College Alumni. After being Mayor of Clinton he was for many years an offioer of the Board of Education. In Freemasonry he has taken every degree and has devoted much of his life to its study. He founded Goodbrake Chapter of tho Clinton Temple and has served in all the posi tions.

He became a Royal Arch Mason in Springfield and went to Chicago in 1857 to be come a Knight Templar. His cultured and amiable wife baa been dead twenty years. He was a prominent member of the Grand Army. He belonged to the Army of the Tennessee and to the Loyal Legion. The doctor was a man of marked individuality and strong convictions.

William H. Herndon, the former law partner of Abraham Lincoln, died at his home near this city to-day, aged 73. Mr. Herndon of late years has not practiced law, but has given up much time to literary work, notably his life of Lincoln. He leaves rive children, two sons and three daughters.

He was born in Green County, Kentucky, Dec. 25, 1818, and has been a resident of this State many years, being connected with Mr. Lincoln in the practice of law from 1848 to the time of the la Iter's election to the Presidency. Herndon's son Willie, aged 21, died of pneumonia about sit hours before his father. Both will be buried on Friday in Oak Itidge Cemetery.

31ACQTJEARY IN DEMAND. Chicago and Other Cities Have Pslplts Wait ing for the Al.eced Heretic. Cakton, Ohio, March 18. The Bev. Howard Maoqueary will preach no more in Canton.

The verdict of suspension would settle that, but he had determined upon immediate resignation, no matter what the result was, merely waiting for the official announcement. Ho has had propositions from the Church of the Messiah (Unitarian) at Chicago; also from a leading Unitarian Church at Toronto, Canada, from Jamestown, N. and other points. He is awaiting the reoeipt of official information of the verdict, which he understands is suspension. His friends think the Bishop has been taking a part in the conviction.

The Bev. Macqucary expected to be acquitted. Although the verdict has been reached and Mr. Maoqueary convioted of heresy, it is not thought that this ends the matter in the church. Mr.

Mscqucary's mail has assumed the size of a Congressman's and bis admirers over the country aro sending in sympathetic messages. Although the verdict will driye him to Unitariauism and from the Episoopal Church, members bore think the questions raised by this case have raised a discussion tho end of which is by no means in sight. BOWERS' FIGURE WILL STAY. The Mount Carmel Hero's lmaxe Will Be Seen on the Grant Statue. Galexa, 111., March 18.

Special leltgrnn. The storm of objection created by the an nouncement made somo time ago to the effect that the figure of Colonel T. 8. Bowers, the Mount Carmel hero, would be eliminated from tho bas relief for the Kohlsaat status of General Grant to be erected in this city, has had the effect to induce the artist, GolerL having the design of the monument in chaige, to introduce tho figures of both Colonel Bowers and General Babcock in such a way as to add, in the estimation of critics, greatly to tho beauty and symmetry of the design. As was predicted in those columns yester day, tho managers of tho Western roads hav concluded to eome to the aid of the Alton Bond by taking concerted action against tho Jacksonville Southeastern Line. They have decided to hold a meeting here at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon when they will probably take steps to advance sufficient money to tho Jacksonville line to get its tickets out of the scalpers hands and thus clear the market.

This is about tho best way of meeting tho emergency, which moans many dollars to every road in interest. THE MONON. President Breyfogle, of the Monon Bonte, made a denial yesterday of the various re ports current in New York regarding his road. He says that he has not resigned, does not intend to resign, and does not expect to leave the Monon for a while. He denies the rumors of the purchase or tho Lake Erie and Western Boad as has been intimated was tho case in New lork.

MONON MANAGEMENT CHANGED. Katw. York, March 18. It was announced on Wall street this morning that the long- rumored chango in dhe management of the Louisville, New Albany and Chicago Railroad Company had taken place. The officers of the company were reticent, but a gentleman familiar with the affairs of the compaoy said: 'At the request of the Brica-Tfcomea party Messrs.

Poor and Greenough have formed a syndicate to buy the 13,800,000 bonds in the treasury. They will pay the committee 70 for the bonds and will also receive a stock bonus. Tho present condition of the road is due to wretched mismanagement by the pres ent party In power, and any change will be welcome." Mr. H. V.

Poor, of Poor A. Greenoueh. said this morning: "We have bought the treasury bonds of the Monon, and there will be a complote change in the directory of the company. Of the thirteen present directors all bnt possibly throo will retire, and their places will be taken by persons who-will be able to throw a large business into the hands of the road. President Breyfogie will resign.

Ho may be a direotor. The Lake Erie and Western interest will be largely represented, and this will also give the road valnsOle southern connections. Wo htve in vited several gentlemen to enter tho board, but we can not toll until to-morrow who 'hey ill be." The directors of the Lake Erie and Western include Hamuel Thomas, John G. Moore, Ocorge F. Baker, and Calvin K.

Brice. All of these gentlemen, except Mr. Baker, are di rectors in the Uichmoud Terminal system, which reaehes Louisville over tho Louisville Southern Road. This road is leased bv the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia, one of tho leased roads of tho terminal system. The Louisville Southern was formerly leased by the Monon, but tho former company broke the lease in March, 103, and in July the road was leased to tho Eaxt Tennessee.

This led to a suit against the Louisville Southern by the Monon, which will now probably bo settled. the management of the two have become more syni alhetic DEMURRAGE DISCUSSED. Omaha, March 18. The annual meet ing of the Western Car Service Association was held here to-day, twelve roads being represented. The meeting was with closed doors, tho principal matter under discussion being the demurrage question.

It was claimed by several roads that the Omaha and St Louis road, the Wabash, had been violating the demurrage rule of the association in the caae of cars loaded with bard and soft coal and lum ber, llns rule provides that loaded cars may be allowed to remain on the track forty-eight hours after receipt without extra charge. For all time over forty-eight hours the consignee shall be charged a certain rate per day on each car. It is claimed that the Wabash has been allowing shippers over its line to hold cars as long as they pleased paying any demurrage, which resulted in the line obtaining traffic to the detriment of other lines in the association. The matter threatened to disrupt the association, and it was given out that unless the Wabash was whipped into line several other lines would withdraw. Mr.

Entrekin, representative of the Wabash claimod his line had only been doing openly what some other lines had been doing secretly. The discussion waxed warm, and it was finally proposed that the association adopt the Chicago demurrage rule, which allows cars to be held three days on the company's track and two days on a private track. A long debate ensued on the question, which was finally put to a vote and adopted, tho Wabash voting in the affirmative. A few other matters of routine business were transacted and the meeting adjourned. A LROAD ASSESSMENTS.

Des Mors'as, Iowa, March 18. Special Telt-qram. The hearing of arguments before the executive council on the question of increasing assessment of railroads was continued today. Labor Commissioner Soveroign and General J. B.

Weaver appeared as representatives of the farmers, and made suong arguments for an increase. There was a running fire of discussion throughout the day, and the council patiently heard all parties who desired to express an opinion on the subjec. At the close of the hearing" the State officials will have to act wholly upon their judgment assessing each line with due regard to its pro ductive capaoity. it is uouotiul any material change will be made.
