I I Top Ratings To 2 Bands From YHS Valparaiso High School's and bands were the only ones in their class to receive superior ratings at a state band contest Saturday at Gary West High School, band director Robert Miller reported. The VHS bands were entered in Class for schools with enrollments of 1,150 to 1,600. Each of the two VHS bands received superior ratings from all four judges, Miller said. Bands were judged on intonation, tone quality, technique, rhythmic accuracy, interpretation and general musicianship, balance and general effect. Three of the four judges gave the band the best possible scores in all categories and the band received the best possible score in sightreading, according to Miller.

Miller reported that coming events for VHS band members include a 15-minute presentation during the Bicentennial Wagon Train program May 11 at the fairgrounds; spring band concert at VHS May 25; and performing at the Indianapolis 500 May 29 From there, the group will travel to King's Island at Cincinnati for its band trip. On July 3, VHS musicians will march in the Bicentennial parade in Valparaiso. I 'L i fin a fc. CHESTERTON ConRail security officials advised Chesterton police Sunday that 125 cartons of drapery were taken from a freight train which had been parked westbound in Chesterton for about an hour early Satur day. Sgt. Thomas Balcius told police the stop in Chesterton was the only one the train had made in its route between Elkhart and Chicago. Vandals damaged a mailbox and uprooted four shrubs at the George Dunleavy residence, 207 E. Green Acres police were told Saturday.

Bauer injured her back when she stepped into the elevator Feb. 11 last year. The assessor has undergone extensive treatment and hospitalization since her injury. More recently, in an unrelated injury, she fell in her home and required extensive hospitalization as a result of those injuries.

Steven Maynard, 19, of 5355 Central Portage, was sentenced by Porter Circuit Court Judge Alfred Pivarnik today to a one-year term on the Indiana Penal Farm. Maynard pleaded guilty a week ago to theft of a purse taken last year from the home of Wilma Ellis, 2848 Lois St. Portage. He was also one of a quartet charged with theft of $152 from a cash register at a Toll Road restaurant. Roger Holland, 21, of 605 Center was sentenced to, a two-year penal term today, having pleaded guilty earlier to possession with intent to deliver marijuana.

Porter Circuit Court Judge Alfred Pivarnik, in accord with a plea bargain agreement, will recommend to the state that Holland be placed at the Indiana Youth Center to serve his term. Holland was among several persons who were arrested for drugs late in March. PORTAGE Police here recovered two stolen vehicles during the weekend. Car owned by Keith Mathern, DeMotte, was found Friday on Stagecoach Road. The vehicle, destroyed by fire, had been stolen from Village Shopping Center, Gary.
