we are an excellent academic school. And we get more support for our team than any other junior college in the state. We fill our gym." The rate at which Florida College basketball players have been recruited by four-year schools bears out. Wilson's promise. Manuel and team co-captain Billy Owens this year, Wilson says they will follow in the footsteps of FC grads Gates Irwin at Texas Don Owens at East Carolina and a score of others.

Florida College plans to expand its curriculum to four years as soon as it can raise the money. But basketball will have the same place when the school reaches that level as it does now, Wilson says. "We will never go big-time. Our function as a junior col- lege or a four-year school will not be to build a national power. We're here to provide a good education.

We want the best team we can have on our natural competitive level." The ambitious Wilson had only three or four years of high school coaching under his belt when he accepted the post. He had played college basketball at Georgia Tech. and had become acquainted with Florida College through his wife. Sharman. who attended school there.

The recruiting hassles are over now. according to Wilson. He is permitted to recruit the best student-athletes he can find. And the administration gives him its wholehearted support in this regard. Wilson's message to prospective players includes the promise of an excellent academic life, great student support and the chance to play right out of high school.

"I tell them they can play right away against real good competition and then go on to a four-year school as several of our players will do this vear." he savs. "We feel like QT. The Netherlands (UPI) Chess officials say Bobby Fischer will lose his world title to Anatoly Karpov of the Soviet Union unless he reverses his decision not to play a scheduled title match "The chances of a match now are nil," according to Ed.

B. Edmonson, head of the U.S. Chess Federation. Fischer was quoted as saying yesterday he would not play after the World Chess Federation turned down one of his proposed rules changes. He wanted the rules to provide in the case of a 9-9 tie that he keep the title but split the prize money if Karpov scored his nine wins first.

After the vote. Florenco Campomanes, vice president of the World Chess Federation, called Fischer at his California home and told newsmen: "Fischer said the voting meant he would definitely not play the title match."
