The ease experienced has been largely due to the weak and lower markets at the principal Eastern cities. The calls for sc coznmodation from the regular customers of the banks have not materially fallen off, bat the oat-aide opportunities for lending money, which were very abundant two weeka since, hare dwindled to almost nothing. Whatever commercial paper ia being made of the kind tnat naturally falls into brokers' hands is now sent to New York, or some other cheap market, for discount. Board of Trade firms are not in need of any large amounts of capital, and the tendency of country deposits here la to increase quite freely. The movementa of currency are not large, bat receipts are decidedly in ezceas ot shipments.

Interest rates are quotable at 6. 7. and per cent on the regular market, while brokers report street rates easy at per cent on all and 6 per cent on time where satisfactory col laterals are offered. It is believed that the active movementa of merchandise which usually come toward the end of January and the freer produce operations at the end of the month will add some- vnat to sue genera vmiuuf moui ui iwaaauio iuuun flu. hinitumH tncreaae in the week's ban clear ings over the same period of lAyf, Indicates that general trade ia becoming more active.

Time-loaning rates show a tendency to go lower, and it ia beliered that some short-time transactions have been closed at below per cent.

Tbe latter is still the nominal flgnre for thirty to sixty days, about 3V, per cent for sixty days, and 4 per cent for a year. The amount ot business doing in this class, however, is very limited. For call loans the ruling rate is 2 '4 per cent, but occasionally transactions are made at a fraction away from that figure. The demand is small, and rates are ao low that canvaasiag for favorable terms has virtually ceased. The cora-mercial-aaper brokers are doing little or no business, simply because they have nothing to sell, Erery lot of paper offered is very quickly taken no at rates rwhich are gradually settling lower.

The sales reported are of email amounts." The London Kcimmxat aaya of the financial situation "i'or the moment the market ia flooded with money, bat it does not seem likely that much of that will remain after the accounts with the Bank have been adjusted, and now, in the ordinary course of things, the revenue collection will sweep money into the bank. Thus the present drop in the value of money ia likely to be only temporary, for the Bank is certainly not yet in a position to lower its rate, and it may bo expected gradually to gain control OTr the market and make it rate effective." The Londoa Bankers Clearing House transactions for the yesr just closed exceeded in segregate these of 1887 by about 14 per cent, and surpassed by nearly 10 per cent the largest amount previously recorded that of the year 188L The transactions of 1888. amounting to 6,942,172.000 afford en of the oest Indications of commercial activity In Great Britain. The WaA Street Arte says: "A bin was Introduced in the New York Assembly yesterday allowing the trustees of savings banks to invest in the municipal stocks and bonds of Boston, Chicago, and St. Lionia.

We note a sesreity ef first-class nigh priced bonds in the market. The investment demand for them thus far this month has been quite heavy. The bell Telephone Company ia in hard luck. Nbw Tobk. Jan. 19. The stock market was again fairly active to-day and for the general list Inclined to strength, but an attack upon the south-westerns checked this tendency and such avail advances as had been made in tbe early dealings were generally neutralized toward the oloee. There was aa usual of late little disposition, to trade, though seemed inclined while London and the first prioes the trade as a role to cover at the opening ras a buyer of Erie in moot of the active share showed advanoea over last evening' figures extending to per cent.

'The latter was in Missouri Pacific. There -was less attention paid to the South westerns in tbe early trading, but New England came to the front and led a general npward movement with a gain of per cent. Pullman was, howavet, the special feature of the early trading, and it rapidly shot an 4 per cent, to 189, again breaking the record ot the highest price. This movement Was accompanied by a revival of the reports tbst the Pullman Company had opened negotiations for the absorption of the Union Palace Car Company which were progressing favorably, and that an announcement of their consnmmauon might be looked for. Tbe npward spurt soon ceased, and a determined attack upon Consolidated Gas changed the temper of the speculation.

This was followed by a further drive at the southwestern and Atchison and Missouri Pacino gave way rapidly, the former reaching 59. which ia the lowest price since 188L The activity acoomoanrins the raid was very marked in those two stocks, and Atchison for the first time since its listing upon the New York Stock Exchange led the list in point of activity. New Haven was also very strong again at the opening, ana It again reached its highest figures, 225. The bank statement was favorable, but had no apparent effect, and while the general list was well held throughout a sagging tendency was displayed after the first break in gas. The close was fairly active and rather heavy at close to the opening figures, The following were the quotations and sales a the New York Stock Exchange: CLosmo.
