A DEFECTIVE MEMORY. Columbus, Ohio, March Special TtU-gram. The defendant, Ilobert B. Montgomery, resumed the stand thia morning, and after a few question in direct examination was cross-examined by C-olonel Holmes. The latter part of the direct examination was an endearor to how that Granville had boen guilty of base ingratitude.

Montgomery took him into hia office out of the penitentiary, paid his board, got him employment, and eren roomed with him. On cross-examination the witness admitted that he bad a copy of his testimony before Magistrate Fritchey in his pocket and that he had read it three or four times since the case opened for the purpose of refreshing his memory. He first became acquainted with Granville in May, 1882. The time of the October, 1 885, election Montgomery wrote a letter to T. E.

Sayres, at Janes-yille, offering to secure the payment of any bill contracted by Granville to the extent of $200. It will be remembered that Granville confesses to baring been the tool of Montgomery and the gang, and an effort will be made to show that his acknowledgment of having been IMPLICATED IN THg TOBOERT -was the natural consequence of his connection. Shortly after the election Montgomery and Granville went to Cincinnati oa some secret mission, presumably to interview John McLean. Montgomery registered at the. hotel as It B.

Montgomery and friend. The defendant told a very flimsy story as to the object of this visit He became unmanageable at one time, and refused to answer, bnt was finally pacified, and proceeded to contradict a long list of reputable witnesses in several important particulars. He claimed that Granville called oa him at his house at midnight on the Sunday following the election, to bring him a certain copy of an article prepared by H. J. Booth, for publication in the Timet of this city.

Though he confessed that be had not read the article that night, he was unable to explain why he had not read the stenographer's notes at his office early in the evening, and said that the reason he happened to be up that nicht was that he was preparing a case tor hearing Monday morning. The Ktate will further cross-examine him in the morning. McSweeney argued an hour in Steube's behalf -after 4 o'clock, but the case will not be taken up again until 4 o'clock Saturday, when Colonel Holmes will close and the case will be 5 EWSDEALERS. frnmrt winter, uewttlmlrr.
