co The Signal, P.O. Box 801870. Santa Clarita, 91380-1870. 4 1. if A Scoop Continued from page A5 What was different now though, was that sometimes we were on opposite sides of the same issues.

She is much more religious than I and has heartfelt allegiance with the religious right on right-to-life issues. She is a union stalwart, employed to represent the right of the allegedly downtrodden organized worker against the management lackeys. on the other hand, am employed by an industry that makes me put "allegedly" in front of every adjective. And no, I don't belong to a union. Don't believe in them.

Don't go to church, either, but do believe in the Golden Rule and across-the-board compassion. We've both gone up and down the fitness scale; she waterskiied so much in her teens that one-armed pull-ups were a walk in the park; I lifted weights and have documentation to prove that my dress size at one time only had one digit. Both of us now carry a bit more baggage than doctors are happy with, but we're working on it. Vicki was always the one I could go to when my mother drove me crazy (yes, the stable one going to the wild one for counseling. It worked out in the end).

A few years ago, she was there to help me deal with my mother's sudden death. As we sat in a coffee shop near the cemetery, her pager went off telling her that her mother had taken a nasty fall and would need to be put into an "assisted living" situation. Now, with dementia setting in, Vicki is dealing with a mother who hardly knows her, who forgets falling or wandering or even why she's not in her own apartment. We've approached the mother situation together and come out knowing that whatever difficult decision has to be made, we don't have to make it alone. What's so beautiful about Vicki is that our differences simply don't matter.

Our lives have done the biofeedback wobble, and it's true, the more we changed, the more we stayed the same. I still get in my car on a moment's notice for a road tfh and unabashedly call ahead to reserve her guest room; she has more than once shown up onSfly doorstep in the middle of the night. She's there without being there, just as I still live around the corner from her house in1 spirit. I love this woman who laugljs at my jokes, who cares about Imy family, and who will gladly clear a seat on the next rocking chair at the home for me. I'm sure' she knows it, because I tell her ejVery time we talk.

Shy is something-we've never been. I'm glad I gpt to tell her in front of a few thousand readers here's lookingiat you, Vick. 1 Carol Rock 's column apptttrs on Tuesdays. Polo Championships at the Air Force Academy in Nov. 1996.
