Old varieties collected by the Savers tell a story of the Americas a bean traced back to the Mexican emperor Montezuma, another bean that came over on the Mayflower and corn used in American Indian ceremonials. These are glamorous ones, but the Savers are also looking for rare, unique and seemingly forgotten seeds that accompanied the great waves of immigration to this country. In a yearbook issued each January, the Savers list thousands of rare and unusual vegetables they trade among themselves and offer for sale to other gardeners. Information about membership, which costs $25 annually, and other information is available in a four-page color brochure for $1 from the Seed Savers Exchange, 3076 North Winn Road, Decorah, Iowa, 52101.
