Only one other Utah student won a first place in the events, Kim Ward of Ogden, who won in second year typing. Miss Heaton was a 1977 graduate of Provo High School where she was on the debate team. She and her partner, Jana Bills, won five first places in Utah competition. The daughter of Dr.

and Mrs. Israel Heaton, Miss Heaton served on the school's supreme court and has a Dean's Scholarship next year at Brigham Young University. Other Utah winners were Elizabeth Gardner, Olympus High School, second place in first year typing Scott Nelson, Cyprus High School, fifth place in data processing. LOR1K HEATON and Floyd Leavitt, Granite High School, sixth place in business law. Some 2,800 students from more than 40 states attended the conference in Denver, including 75 from Utah.

Special training was given the students in the areas of leadership development and the need to more ful-ly understand the American Free Enterprise System. I88 1 1 II ir "3 ii The Utah State Historical Society and the Women in Utah History Task Force of the International Women's Year are co-sponsoring a contest for scholarly and amateur writings on topics related to the history of women iu Utah and the contributions of individual women or women's groups to thp statp Cash prizes totaling $200 will be given to the winning manuscripts.

The purpose of the contest is to elicit well-researched articles for possible publication in "Utah Historical Quarterly." Subjects suggested by the sponsors include biography, the arts, business, politics, medicine, education, the home, non-political women's organizations, or any other subject that features a woman or women in Utah. "Women have yet to be given their full measure of recognition in Utah history." said Dr. Veronica E. Tiller, assistant professor of history at the University of Utah and contest chairman. "We hope this contest will stimulate women, and men too.to research and write about the contributions of individual woman and women's groups to the state." Maximum length of each manuscript is 25 typewritten double-spaced pages, including footnotes.
