Hence the Newmans must get htm out of town for the summer, even though It ta Impossible for Papa. Newman to escape from town except from Saturday to Monday.

Wanted Mora Fishing. He did that all summer, grinding away at the accounts of a lurttiwii export house throughout the week, and tasting salt sir and domesticity over Sundays. The prl-an school Intrusted with pounding learn' ina into Willie opened on the Kith of iant munth. but Willie waj ailing. He opined iIiai a Ultle more of crabbing and fiahiruf in the Shrewsbury Klver would fix htm all right, all right, and aa he stuck to that proposition with characteristic stubborn ness.

Mamma Newman gave In to him. So they didn't come back to town until papa hd started on his vacation. He preferred the mountain's, and after his usual day at lxng Mranch bad headed for a camp of so- qualnlances In tbe Adirondack. Tftose with Intimate knowledge of him mould think that he bad planned tbe schedule about right, but the fact was that -lie got h'. dates mixed somehow.

But It waa arwtethf too large an order for her or her wnrcan rrvaiit, ao she hired a sort of true n.j neighborhood to act in that capaci ty He preceded her to the apart- merit jr half an hour. Expecting to find It empty, re waa as surprised as his peculiar ly placid make-up would permit him to on discovering an attractive young woman Installed therein. He stated errand briefly, and was still more surprised to view the attractive one's perturbation. The missis was Just behind him.

after firing questions at him as to how long behind him the householder waa. turned htm ou of the room -that she might change to heri own belongings. Kven so. through a rruck' of the door she piled with questional and as a atep was heard In tbe hall commanded him to explain that ahe hud been sent to help for the day in setting things to rights. The Incomer was only 'the servant, but the mt strata waa close at hand, and the man made the explanation of the other's presence as requested.

Mrs. Newman waa pleased, for she. didn't enjoy the Job In prospect, and asked only who sent the woman. The trusty didn't know, but supposed It waa Mr. Newman.

She Was Too The wife wondered, yet on seeing the young woman felt sure that the explanation waa correct. For the attractive one waa a former servant, one who had been Intrusted for a time with Willie's out- Ings In the park and who had escorted him to and from school. She had had other duties, of course, but these were the chief ones- But she had proved unsatisfactory. She waa too pretty, for one and then Newman had noticed her too much. So she had gone, with a character, and Newman bad chlded hi spouse on what he styled her unreasoning jealoasy.

Now she was here, ahe ought to. be useful, and the wife accepted the explanation, set V1" young woman at simple tasks and went on thinking. 'As, she pondered the situation she made her way about the finding here aad there cause for most serious suspicions. But the more ahe saw that made her'blood boil the kinder ahe was ta her Hval. and the more encouragement ahe gave the latter, to feel entirely at her ease.

By the time the furniture, which had arrived rloeely after her. had been brought In and placed she had had a careful talk with the young and engaged her to resume her old place. The latter couldn't think of it for a time: she was there only 'temporary." as a favor, but the other urged so strongly and so kindly withal that finally she commented, more in dumbness than anything else. JUt Him With a Boar. Four day of settling the household had kept her busy, and during this time it had been mentioned to her In various ways that the head of the house waa going to extend bis play-time by a fortnight-.

If the woman had an idea, of escaping from her oua surroundings she waa made to feel -that she yet had time to get away, when Newman arrived. Tbe wife met him with set words of welcome, delivered with all the sympathy and sweetness of a Gat ling cannon. I-izl'e waa. there to welcome him. too.

aaa matter of course, altogether more, as one spologlser puts it, than a man needs to. Their Uaqueochablo Thirst. He was in this gait on tbe occasion of bis last visit to tbe Mlxth-evenae lobster shop. Three damsels were in hla tow. They were young, lively and.

elating tbe situation at 3 a. when they began to be especially they had been hungry. Kven then they were picking a morsel here or there, but when a trio of frail young dears have demolished vlanda to the tune of fJO 75, the toting to that hour. It would seem as If their bunger might be a thing of the past. Not so their thirst, however.

It waa wine time for theirs, and a quart -was being set before I hem when. In temporary absence rrom lue women, tne lurpunn ru upon two younger men of bis acquaint ance. They 'had noticed his companions. and remarked on them. They were his nieces, line young women, the furnisher declared, and added when the others give the opening that he'd be delighted lo make them known to them.

So the wine drinkers became six. Its new members Were welcome to the others. One man to three women may 4e a satis factory statu when the three are hungry and the one la liberal, but when the flxi appears reapportionment certainly Is in or der. One of the women, observing the ap proach of the men, rose and seated herself In a chair that a 'waiter had placed, leaving a gap between the other two and between herself and the nearest. A.

Familiar Face- In a Jiffy thus the party were aeated around the table In a sociable alternation of petticoats and One of the newcomers noted that the face of the, woman at his aide waa familiar. Two or three years previous she had served aa cashier In -that shop In which the proprietor of all mad headquarters. The new member ventured the opinion that the business then engaging tbe company beat toting sales checks and making change by a mile, to which the damsel responded by winktng. sticking her tongue against her Cheek and bestowing a sldewlse toss of her head In the direction of the furnisher, a combination that was whole volumes for expressiveness. Tbe other women were quite as much Inclined to liveliness, and all three were as thirsty- as they had been hungry.

The furnisher stood to hi end with characteristic ardor. Nobody but himself could buy. but there was' no lack of wine In consequence. Bottles were produced end hur ried through, and In an hour the six were feeling much better thank you. They preserved Dhssable demeanor, and seemed good for an Indefinite continuance Of It.

when suddenly there arose above their almost continuous chattter a long drawn peal ot delighted laughter, ending in a squeal that advertised the laugher's tlpslnfss. Could Hot Chock Her. if was the ex-cashier, and even as a head waiter edged nearer In manner that outwardly was casual, but that really was alertness Itself, she let go again. The buxa In the big room halted; those near-by the six and one or two at remote tables stood up to Identify the frolicker. The bead waiter busied himself at the ta ble, directing its waiters and seeking by his presence to subdue the outbreak, but the wine waa in and all fear of authority was away out.

Tbe woman's companion. however, held her In check for a time, and the moved -away a little. What came next may be. laid to the door of the man who had recognised the girl. There can be no doubt of this, for la It not written in alt the books of Instruction In polite conversation -that one ahould not talk shop? And he Instated on making furnishings the subject of his clfat with the enlivened woman.

Hose. If you please, was the matter he Insisted on discussing. He and the woman plainly were in disagree ment, positive, but of a Jolly sort. They nerf to exchana-e retorts and come no nearer concurrence, when she quickly pushed her chair back and shouted, laugh- in' Black. By then the head waiter was bending over her, hiding the disclosure and admonishing. Almost simultaneously another floor watcher seised the offender under the arms and dragged her. chair and all.

Then she whipped her foot onto the doth again and secured a good grip on the table Took TugwJiM a Hon. "You muts!" she sh'oeted at the rush line waiters; "I'm labelled 'Use No Hooka. see!" It was going home time now. and 'there was no refusing tbe manner of the Invitation. But the lady bad been by that grasp upon her ankle, even the -furnisher felt that, and when some one stepped on his net com la the scrimmage, he let go at the nearest nose In sight.
