ESCAPE FLIES HIGH Aerospace Walk of Honor ceremonies set Sept. 19 By Carol Rock Signal Entertainment Editor r- i I 1 All right all you aerospace junkies, here's one for you. Lancaster yes, our friendly neighbor to the east -will be in the national spotlight when five world-renowned test mm pilots will be introduced as hon- r. weekdays at 10:15 a.m. and 1:15 a.m.

The tour is free, but reservations are required. Arrangements may be made by calling (805) 258-3460. The Air Force Flight Test Center Museum, also at Edwards, features a variety of aircraft on display, including the B-52, F-104, F-lll, T-28 and T-39. It's open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tuesday through Saturday, and admission is free. For further information, call (805) 277-8050. And the Blackbird Airpark, located at Avenue and 25th St. East (maintained and operated by the AFFTC museum) is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Edwards Air Force Base has served as the site where the USAF, US Navy and private aerospace companies have tested, developed and evaluated nearly every aircraft in its inventory. It is the site of America's first jet flight by the Bell XP-59A Airacomet in 1942, the first supersonic flight by then Capt.

Charles E. Yeager in the Bell XS-1 in 1947, world's absolute speed record for winged aircraft set in 1967 by Sen. Knight (4,520 mph in the X-15 rocket research aircraft) and the landing, in 1981, of the first space shuttle mission. Those interested can tour the NASAHugh Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards H. "Jimmy" Doolittle, USAF and Brig.

Gen. Charles E. "Chuck" Yeager, USAF were memorialized in stone. The ceremonies will begin with a public unveiling of the six-foot tall granite monuments recognizing the accomplishments of the honorees at noon in front of the library at the intersection of Lancaster Blvd. and Cedar Ave.

At 6 p.m., a formal banquet is scheduled at the Essex House. Tickets for the evening event are $75 per person and can be purchased at the Lancaster City Hall or at the box office of the Lancaster Performing Arts Center.
