Many kind friends sold by David urrus, mayizu purpose of having them form a committee to gather flowers. During the rounds sev-' era! of the wealthy ladies as well as gentlemen spoke of a Soldier's monument to be erected on Market Square. After the ladies committee had been formed another meeting of the O. A.

R. called, and a committee appointed to interview our prominent citizens to see what the feeling was In regard to the matter, and they found the feeling was good and many stated they would subscribe liberally for a monument. After this a large number of gentlemen held a meeting and a Racine Soldier' Monument Association was formed with L. C. Porter as President, Mr.

M. B. Erskine, and W. T. Lewis, Secretary.

Mr. L. C. Porter being a stranger in the city, resijked his position as president and after looking over the city carefully, Dr. John G.

Meachem, was chosen, and unanimously elected president of the association. The members of the association went to work and are now at work, circulating subscription papers and they are being liberally signed and much interest is being taken, at least $4,000 having already been subscribed. Jt is to be hoped no one will permit their political prejudices to come in the way of a project of this kind, and that the best of feeling will prevail, and all join hands and carry the good work forward with grand success, by getting up a monument that will be a credit to the city and an honor to the brave boys who fought, bled and died for their country. From both parties were enlisted the forces that conquered treason. In Mound cemetery, in cemeteries in other cities, in a countless number of graves in Southern battlefields lie the remains of those who hastened to their country call, the mustering official never inquired "what party do you belong to?" No one else asked such questions.

And now after long years it is meet that such a glorious project to hono the memory of the "Boys in Blue" should be deprived of the last vestige of party. A few designs have been talked of, pne them being that of a monument on exhibition at the centennial, a photograph of which is in the possession of lady in our city. A MT. No lens than eight new houses are being erected in one portion of the Hixth ward, within a block of each other. There are now three ties at the shoot-gallery, between F. W.
