Valparaiso university's current basketball record reads two victories arid four defeats, but witnesses at the team's home games will tell you that despite that, compilation the Dunes Hawks (that may become the school's adopted athletic cognomen) have not yet been "beaten." Sure they lost those last four games but even that 63-42 spanking that Indiana State administered last Friday night was not a bitter pill to swallow.

It had its sweet angle. Notable' achievement of this varied group of inexperienced go National league rivalry between the Giants and the Dodgers is renewed on the bowling alleys in New York as the Giants Billy Jurges and wife, left and Harry Danning and wife, right, compete with the Dodgers' Freddie Fitzsimmons and wife, center, in a private match preceding entry of the women in a bowling tourney. With the annual Porter county basketball tournament less than ten days away the paramount issue of nine of the ten teams is "What to do about Portage?" The only apparent answer is "Nothing." Like one fan remarked after the game Friday, "Twenty points behind and only one minute to go and Valparaiso was playing as hard as it did at the start of the game." Curtis Gets Surprise That Is a real tribute to Coach Loren tins ana his boys ana a fitting one.

Coach Glen Curtis got several surprises in this game. He admitted that after the contest was ended. His squad of supermen led by only six points as the half ended, and while he wasn't worried he literally tore his team to pieces during the rest period to get them( to unleash that vaunted power. They did just that in the final 20 minutes, but when the game was ended Valpo' was the first team to score more than 30 points against his charges (they scored 42) and they were the club to lose by a margin of less than 25 points! Central Normal's veteran club packed more dynamite than Valpo's green ensemble, but Hank Miller's squad had all they could do last month to get away with a one-point victory. VIKINGS PLAY CLARK FRIDAY IN LOCAL GYM Still hunting for that cage conquest which has eluded them for more than a month, the luckless Valpo Vikings will meet a new foe, George Rogers Clark of Hammond, this coming Friday on the hardwoods of Boucher gym, the preliminary starting at the usual time of 7 o'clock. The team that, the Green is slated ijo meet is in no way a weak foe having defeated Hammond high, the school that so thoroughly trampled the Vikings a week or so before Christmas. This means that the locals will have to be on their toes when they play this new member of the Northern Indiana high school conference. A review of, the records of pre-ceeding games shows the Powell-men not only lacking in the stuff needed, to win ball games, but also holding a small percentage count on fleldgoals made for those In slightly over 450 tries the Vikings have sunk 94 shots for ah approximately shooting aveAge of 20 percent. In comparison to this.

Viking opponents have sunk 150 of their 480 tries, for a near 30 percent average and have out-scored the green 345 to 239. The closest the Green clad five has come to conquering their opponents in the past seven games is eight points, except in the contest with Lew Wallace where fell by Just two points. The Viking defense has appeared very weak in face of the high counts rolled up by their foes, such as the 49-22 victory for Roosevelt, not so long ago. One fact of saving grace for the locals should, however, be retained, that being that the Powellmen have been playing against some of the toughest competition in the state. Such teams as Horace Mann, Roosevelt, and Hammond High," all of whom are in the Calumet region where coaches may have an almost unlimited pick' of players, have been met bylheyikings.

Coach Ralph Powell in attempt ing to overcome his difficulties, has shifted his line-up, and in so doing may soon find the. needed win ning combination. The team is now in the last half of the 41-4S season and if they are eolne to show a renewed spirit it will have to be soon. Frantic, unleashed "fight" by an underdog team of Indiana univer sity basketballers, coupled with the unprecedented stoppage of Don Blanken's scoring spree, shocked a confident, well-ciled Purdue team to its first Big defeat here last night, 40-39.

The bulk of 6,000 observers, after screaming through a night of Lambert-McCracken fast break basketball agreed today that Purdue due was not outplayed but out fought. From the starting tipoff to the final gun, it was the "scrap" of an inexperienced I. U. five against the cooL capable machinery of one of Piggy Lambert's most masterful creations. But it was the "scrap" that won.

Victorious in three opening con ference battles over Chicago, Mich igan and' Ohio State, the Boilermakers, Frosty SprowL Mike Tier-ney and Allen Menke passed and shot with the unharried abandon of champions. But Branch, Mccracken's boy3 wrested control of the vital backboard rebounds to gain the ball, and Irv Swanson and Ed Denton made it pay off with 14 and 13 points, respectively. For the first time in his collegiate career, the capable Don Blanken was a complete loss to die Boilermakers. Blanken was shut out without a point to offset the personal fouls, marked against He amassed the three personals early, in first period and remained on the bench through 30 minutes of the final session. The loss of Blanken also left Purdue without its key defensive buff, and permitted the inspired Hoosiers to capture the classical rivalry tilt.

It was the only meet ing of Indiana and Purdue this season. Din of the 6,000 uncontrollable spectators reached its peak in the final eight minutes' of play when Purdue gained a tie at 34-all for the first time in: the game on a fielder: by, SprowL Seconds later I. U. again took the lead, which exchanged "hands once more before Sprowl again deadlocked the game at In the closing seconds, was loosed as Sprowl clicked on a shot that was ruled out when Sprowl traveled before shooting. The scoreboard registered the goal, and in the ensuing confusion, with the actual score at 40-37 for Indiana, Hoffman hit for Purdue to bring the Boilermakers within one point as the gun sounded.

The percentages, as always, won the game. The Hoosiers hit from the field for 32, making 17 out of 53 shots: made 15 out of 71 for 21.1. I. U. hit six out of 12 free, throws, and Purdue made nine out of 17.
