a Action Saves Planes in Midair Two Collide But No One Injured Aberdeen, Dec. 20 (AP). Split-second reactions by two lots were credited today with saving the lives of 85 passengers and crew members of two Miamibound airliners which collided 2000 feet in the air near here in an accident unprecedented in American commercial air travel. None of the passengers suffered so much as a scratch, although both were damaged in the collision, planes, which occurred in clear weather shortly after dark last night. The of one, a big, fourengined co pilot Eastern Airlines craft carrying 56 passengers, said he saw the other, a two-engined Universal Airlines C-47, approaching from the left three or four miles north of Aberdeen.

He pulled his ship up at the last instant, and Universal scraped plane, over, Eastern the top offi- of cials Second to Spare D. C. Little Stir on Planes The co-pilot, R. Brown, of Miami, said he had "just a second or two" in which to avert disaster. The pilot of this plane, J.

B. Kuhn, also of Miami, told a reporter, "Brown saved the day." A three-by-five-foot hole was ripped in the tail section of the larger plane, while the Universal liner, carrying 22 passengers and a crew of three on a charter flight, had a hole driven upper portion of the fuselage, its escape hatch wrenched free and its radio and hydraulic system knocked out of commission. Despite the damage, Henry Norris, of Cambridge, pilot of the Universal ship, brought it down safely at the Aberdeen proving ground field, while the Eastern plane was landed uneventfully by Kuhn before waiting crash-wagons and fire engines at National Airport, Washington, The four-engined DC-4, cruising at about 230 miles an hour, apparently had overtaken the slower aircraft. Universal plane, bound for San Juan, Puerto Rico, via Miami, left Newark airport at 5:08 P. M.

The Eastern Airliner departed at 5:13 P. M. from the same field, on a scheduled non-stop run to Miami. Occupants of both planes mostly vacationists and businessmen, reported little if any confusion at the time of their narrow escape, and most said they had been unaware of the extent of their danger. All, however, had lavish praises for crew members.

Officials of the Civil Aeronautics Board, who questioned the EAL crew in Washington for hours after they landed, said it was the first time American commercial air history such an accident had occurred between two planes headed in the same direction. Same Level Permitted Federal safety regulations require planes flying in opposite directions to maintain different altitudes, but planes on the same heading, although separated by time intervals, fly on the same levels. The co-pilot of the Universal plane, Eugene M. Harvey, of Miami, said he "didn't know we had been in collision until after we landed." After the crash, he said, "we checked our landing gear visaully, and it looked O. but we had no way of knowing whether it would stand up under a landing because of the hydraulic system.

"The Aberdeen field was lighted, and we tried to contact them by radio, only to find the radio was shot also. So we circled the field and came in with our fingers crossed. Another plane sent down from Newark picked up the Universal passengers at Aberdeen proving ground field this morning and continued to Miami. It had a new crew, and the crew of the damaged C-47 remained with the plane, pending arrival of CAB investigators sent from New York and Washington, Eastern Airlines sent another DC-4 to Washington to enable passengers who wished to do SO to continue their flight. 20 (AP). Police today identified "Louie," an aged man who two nights ago gave his life to rescue an injured dog from a busy highway near here. They said he was Louis A. Denner, 71, a retired nurseryman, living on the outskirts of the city. Night before last, Denner saw an injured collie on Atlantic and, skirting passing traffic, sought to rescue the animal.

One car barely missed him and another, apparently following too close behind, struck the aged man, He was instantly killed. Police found on the body only a scrap of paper on which was scrawled "Louie," and while the body lay unidentified in a morgue, the dog the man had tried to save died. Today, a mid-Florida resident offered to pay the funeral expenses for Denner if circumstances prevented an otherwise proper burial. The Floridan asked that his name not be publicized. But police said that would be unnecessary.

Denner lived with two daughters and a son here. Funeral services will be held tomorrow, with burial in Evergreen Cemetery following. Airmail Service Is Postponed Orlando, Dec. 20 (AP).
