Next Sunday will be Dahlia Tuiiday in the Oakland Park Department's famed trial and show gardens, including the Jeading and original test garden" for the American Dahlia Society on the Pacific Coast. More than 2,900 plants, representing 320 varieties in all' types, colors and sizes, will dazzle the eye. Commercial displays will be in the 70-foot Picture Room downstairs, mass of blooms on three-tiered tables converting the long wall into a riot of color as background to a floor-full of exhibition tables. Extensive and varied amateur displays will be in the Vista Room, Garden Room, and lanai on the main floor. As an added highlight this year, a junior section is being included, with four displays contributed by young dahlia enthusiasts and with a junior category in the competition. Age limit for entrants is 15 years. Judging by 33 outstanding horticulturists from all "over the state on Saturday morning will determine winners in the various competitive categories.

POIRIER STREET in North Oakland was named for DeLima Poirier who in the 1850s owned and farmed 160 acres adjoining Shattuck Ave. Some of his land is now the site-of Bushrod Park and Washington Grammar SchooLJHis home stood at the southwest corner of 61st and Shattuck Ave. VALDEZ STREET is named for Jose Valdez who owned the land from 20th to 28th between Broadway andHarrison. In 1866 he sold 6V2 acres (not the entire piece as an earlier article indicated) to Father King of St. Mary's Church for the Sisters of the College of Holy Names for $4,920.
