Los Angeles, April 7. (AP) Poor old Dean Cromwell seems to face each track season minus a host of stars from the year before, and what does he get just an other championship for Southern California. Last year, for instance, they counted the good dean out before the firing started.

The best the Trojan outfit could do was win its third straight National Collegiate Athletic Association title, another Pacific Coast Conference crown and produce two pole vaulters good enough to. set a world record of 14 feet 11 inches. Troy goes into the 1938 campaign with much the same rating as last year. California may not be. as strong as in 1937, and we may not win the X.

C. A. A. again, because no team has ever won it four times in a row. "But," warned the veteran coach, "Southern California is the team to beat.

I'll bank on that." The Trojans get their first, and perhaps strongest, test against California's well-rounded squad Saturday at Berkeley. Earl Meadows and Bill Seton, the pole vaulting twins, are gone. So are Roy Staley, Olympic high hurdler, George Boone and Clark Crane, sprinters; Half-miler Ross Bush and others. But Co-captain Adrian Tally, conference sprint champion who did 9.6 seconds last year in the 100, and Payton Jordan, a vastly improved century man, should perform well. Erwin Miller, who did 48.6 in junior college, and Howard Bach-man, Jim Lytle and Horace Taylor, sophomores who can get under 50 seconds, are Troy's hopes in the quarter-mile.

Phil Roulac, a senior, should give anyone a battle in the 880, and Louis Zamperini, first among the American runners in the 1936 Olympic games mile, may be a sensation. Loring Day and Kenny Dills, juniors, have vaulted 14 feet repeatedly, Delos Thurber hopes to better his 6 feet 7 's in the high jump. Jimmy Humphrey in the high hurdles and Earl Yickery, X. C. A.

(AP) Augustine Gonzalez, shifty Puerto Rican lightweight, was awarded the decision over Johnny Rinaldi, New York, in the six-round main preliminary to the Sol Krieger-Izzy Janna.zo middleweight fuss at the Hippodrome last night. Pappie touched the strange fish and almost jumped out of his sea-boots, so sharp was the shock, he said, when the trawler arrived at the fish pier with the unusual specimen. Captain Gus Dunsky, the trawler's skipper, asked the bureau of fisheries to identify the fish. The Whitecap's catch resembled a shark and a pronounced indentation of the forehead gave it a mean cast of countenance. FIGHTS LAST NIGHT. New York.
