Though less surprising than the first film, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is more visually inventive, stringing together one eye-popping set piece after another. It's blockbuster moviemaking at its best. Special features: Commentary by director James Gunn, deleted scenes, a gag reel and extensive behind-the-scenes featurettes THE SEQUEL to "Guardians of the Galaxy" includes Drax (Dave Bautista) and Gamora (Zoe Saldana).

rary political resonances. It's the kind of thoughtful, stylish B-movie that genre fans will embrace. JAYL. The novice starlet plays Pai, a 12-year-old Maori girl who stakes her claim to be leader of her tribe over the objections of her grandfather, who prefers to preserve the patriarchy. A mix of distinctive cultural detail with magical realism, "Whale Rider" is fascinating and uplifting a tale of tribaltradition and female empowerment that's like a live-action model for Disney's "Moana." Special features: A Caro commentary, deleted scenes and featurettes TV set of the week The Walking Dead The Complete Seventh Season StarzAnchor Bay DVD, Blu-ray, $80.99 The controversial seventh season of AMC's zombie epic began with the death of two major characters and ended with the suicide of a third. In between, the show amped up the violence and despair to a greater degree than it ever had before. But it also introduced cool new characters like King Ezekiel (and his pet tiger!) and the gun-toting feminists of the Ocean-side colony. More importantly, last year set up what should be an action-packed Season 8, as the various human factions wage "all out war" to determine who's going to control the scant resources of a land infested with the undead.

In the long run, warts and all, the 16 episodes contained in "The Walking Dead: The Complete Seventh Season" set may turn out to be pivotal for the entire series. Special features: Commentary tracks, tably ends up either licking whipped cream off her legs or perhaps suspending her in midair a la Superman. Or maybe you've already seen Everett alongside her pal Amy Schumer, who has given Everett memorable parts in "Train-wreck" and her Comedy Central series "Inside Amy Schumer." Her girl-gone-wild role in "Fun Mom Dinner," which opened in early August was right in her wheelhouse, but "Patti Cakes," which opened Friday, reveals Everett's impressive range as a dramatic actress. As Barb, the mother of the titular Patti Cakes (Danielle Macdonald), Everett portrays a hard-bitten survivor, a singer whose dreams of rock stardom were dashed long before her daughter's rise as a rapper. It's a delicious part that Everett devours like those Jager shots she downs in her opening scene.

As she makes the rounds on late-night TV and shows up on red carpets, Everett is finally proving the mantra she's been lifting from LL Cool for years: Dreams don't have deadlines. James Reed Fifteen minutes into the new film "Patti Cakes," Bridget Everett slips in through a side door of a seedy tavern to music straight out of a spaghetti western at high noon. Behind the counter, her bartender daughter sizes up the situation: "Christ." "Line up your ma a bomb," Everett's character says. "I gotta grease these pipes." Clicking her French tips against her glass, she demands two more shots of Jager-meister and proposes a toast: "To family, right? Blood is thicker than Jager." In a single scene, that's everything you need to know about Everett, the once and future dynamo of New York's downtown cabaret scene and now a natural star on the silver screen. She's in two films this month, "Patti Cakes" and "Fun Mom Dinner," and nearly walks away with both in her pocket.

A year ago you'd have found the 45-year-old singer and entertainer at Joe's Pub, the beloved New York venue where she holds audiences hostage lovingly, mind you with her raunchy but heartrending theatrics.
