Officials of the Icelandic Chess Federation said they expected the 29-year-old challenger tomorrow.

He had been scheduled to arrive early yesterday, but officials said he cancelled his bookings at the last minute. Sources said Fischer was in seclusion in Los Angeles and quoted him as saying he had every intention of flying to Reykjavik in time for the first game. Spassky told his news conference he had arrived last week in order to get used to conditions and climate and was doing physical exercises and playing some chess in preparation for the match. Spassky, looking calm and relaxed, refused to predict the outcome of the match. Asked whether Fischer was the best chess player of the 20th century, he said, "I will answer that one when the match is over." Spassky, who said he was not a member of the Soviet Communist Party, brushed away any politics of the match.

"When I sit at the chess board, I am a chess player, not a politician," he said. Mexican Troops Hunt Bandits Who Killed 10 ACAPULCO, Mexico (UPI) Mexican armed forces searched by air and land yesterday for a group of bandits that ambushed and killed 10 soldiers about 40 miles northwest of this Pacific resort Sunday. Three air force helicopters and two C47 transport planes carrying assault troops moved into the town of Atoyac de Alvarez, 45 miles west of Acapulco, near where the ambush occurred. The terrorists were believed to have been led by Lucio Cabanas, a former Communist schoolteacher, who has long eluded capture because of his knowledge of the mountain badlands surrounding Acapulco. Most of the slain solderis were executed with a bullet through 1 the head from close range, an official note said.
