The recently opened, musical is sexy, hyperen-ergetic and on a financial roll.

It's not about to hold still long enough for critics to pull thorns from its paws. Basically, is review-proof. The people buying tickets are responding to the show's Must-See publicity hype, not the critical notices, which have been mixed but mostly optimistic. Even at $42 per head should we say tail? the bottom line is: The public wants to see how a few million bucks can dress up some children's verse set to pop music. Curiosity is going to keep this cat alive for a very long time.

THE SHOW has already rung up about in advance sales, a record-breaking draw that is probably responsible for the cocky subtitle in the show's newspaper ad. It reads Cats Now And Forever. That aggressive PR hasn't gone unanswered, though. Another big Broadway musical, 42nd Street, is running its own decidedly catty ad. It reads: Are You Allergic To Cats? Some People Are See 42nd Street.

Months before its American premiere, Cats was receiving enviable word-of-mouth publicity in New York. Those who had seen the London production, which opened last May, were marvelling over these acrobatic felines. Anticipation mounted slowly. The show's huge, mesmerizing billboard it's all black except for a pair of green eyes went up over the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway early last summer. Once Barbra Streisand followed with her popular recording of the show's hit song Memory, the fur was flying.

(It was Old Possum's Book Of Practical Cats, a droll collection of verse for children. Additional lyrics, most notably for Memory, were supplied by Trevor Nunn, the director. The set was designed by John Napier. Even more tantalizing to Broadway watchers was the fact that Nunn and Napier, both from the Royal Shakespeare Company, had staged the elaborate, eight-hour Nicholas Nickleby on Broadway last season. All of which is not to say that Cats is flawless theater.

It's a whopping ball of yarn, all right, but it has some minor problems. 'The songs have Lloyd Webber's now-familiar pop feel. Some are instantly hummable, and a couple, particularly Memory and the opening Jellicle Songs For Jellicle Cats, may dance in your head for days. Other catchy numbers like Mr. Mistoffelees are given prolix treatment.

MOST OF THE show's lyrics are taken directly from Eliot's poems, which are nonsensically named after such cats as Skimbleshanks, Busto-pher Jones, Mungojerrie and Rum-pleteazer. The show's action takes place in an oversized, kitty-scale junk heap where these Tin Pan Alley cats have gathered for an annual ritual. Each year, one is selected by Old Deuteronomy (Ken Page), a sort of godcat, to be sent to the Heaviside Layer (Heaven), where it is reborn into one of its other cat lives. The final ascension, the show's most talked-about moment, takes place on a huge rubber tire that launches off the stage like a UFO, up over the audience in a trail of thick white smoke. If Cats radiates as a technological achievement, it fails to provide much on an emotional level.

The long lineup of cat introductions and the overblown razzmatazz make it impossible to melt the show's mechanical gloss. The audience is more apt to gawk at the special effects than to laugh or cry. The words are often incomprehensible. We don't feel for any of the characters until the second act, when Gus, the Theater Cat (Stephen Hanan), performs his touching soliloquy and acts the part of Growltiger in a comic operetta. WHILE IT'S touted as all-ages entertainment, Cats has much the style of a rock musical.

It doesn't try to finesse you it's a blowout. Many of the cats' shaggy haircuts seem inspired by the early David Bowie glitter-rock look. A few makeup jobs resemble those worn by members of the rock group Kiss. When you add Lloyd Webber's pop rhythms and the arrogant Mick Jagger strut of Rum Turn Tugger (Terrence V. Mann), the feeling is unmistakable.

The show's celebratory participation is another element reminiscent of pop musicals from a decade ago. The audience claps along during some songs. During intermission, you're free to wander onstage to inspect the multimillion-dollar set, which extends into the balcony of the theater. Indeed, the Cats commercial look is the show's major selling point. Among the brand-name trash littering the garbage-dump set are Brim coffee cans, Salem cigarettes, Minute Maid orange juice cartons, Turtle Wax, Coca-Cola cans, and boxes of Uncle Ben's Rice and Quaker Instant Oatmeal (regular flavor).

By KARL VICK St. Peter eburu Time Critic In a freshman class on the principles of communication, a textbook reproduced a Spider-man comic book. The point was to illustrate how a film maker uses framing, close-ups and other techniques also found in print. It was a fun way to learn. Creepshow proves the method doesn't necessarily work in reverse.

Writer Stephen King and director George Romero have tried hard to quite literally transfer a 1950s horror comic to the large screen. They seem to have done most things right. Yet the result is no page-turner. E. C.

Comics, publishers of Tales From The Crypt and other fine periodicals, inspired horror novelist King to write the Creepshow screenplay. It strings together five of his stories the way the comic books used to, complete with full-page ads for X-ray glasses in between. ROMERO, WITH credits including Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, was the natural choice to direct. He even hired former E. C.

artist Jack Kamen to draw comic art borders for some shots and whole "splash pages" that introduce each segment Father's Day, the first, and most comic-like, episode, On Any New '82 Pontiac or Light-Duty GMC Truck! $800 down cosh or trod tax, tag title. BY THE TIME we get to The Crate, starring Hal Holbrook, Fritz Weaver and Adrienne Barbeau, the men's fine performances can't overcome the predictablity of outcome. The concluding episode stars E. G. Marshall as a an-tiseptically fixated millionaire tormented by roaches. This may be the best of the five, in terms of special effects and actor's relish.

But it suffers considerably by coming last. Maybe what Creepshow needed was real advertisements between the stories. Television has commercials, and as much as the movie wants to be a comic book, it more resembles TV's Night Gallery. That's no indictment; just don't go to Creepshow any more than you'd flip on Rod Serling expecting to be seriously surprised. highlights the vengeance of a mean old man who was murdered by a daughter driven mad by his screaming for holiday cake.

In two scenes featuring a sultry female relative discoing around the inherited mansion, Father's Day alone has the straining adolescent sexiness of the 12-cent pulps. It also has a man stumbling stupidly into a misty graveyard. The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill stars King in his acting debut, and is hence the weakest segment. Like all the segments, it does feature a splendid version of what was once a normal human body. Something to Tide You Over, as a title, captures the E.
