THE PRETTIEST GIRIS THI CORNIEST JOKES PLENTY OF GOLD OLE COUNTRY MUSIC tOTS OF FUN (piiUu- AVXCVTV COSTS LESS THAN ABBREVIATED OR LIMITED SERVICE By CHARLES BEN BOW Timet Television Writer Norman Lear, the convention-breaking television producer who makes us blush in our own living room with "All In The a i 1 and "Maude," has done it again. This time he divorced Maude's maid, Florida Evans, from the Findley household last Tuesday and with the magic of television set her up in an entirely different locale bv tonight, 8:30 p.m. on VVTVT-Channel 13.

THE PREMIER of her new weekly series, "Good Times," tonight has her living in a 14th floor housing project apartment in Chicago. She's Mrs. James Evans, mother of three teenagers and wife of an unemployed "handy man" rather than still being Mrs. Henry Evans. The one constant factor is marvelous Esther Rolle as Florida.

One wonders why it took Lear so long to give her her own show. And John Amos, who played an engaging, flirtatious plumber on an earlier "Maude" episode, can match Miss Rolle for warmth, comic timing and, in this episode, slow-boil, fiery-eyed anger. The show's honesty, frankness and generous amount of good belly laughs (again, judged by first show only) is bound to win higher ratings for this time slot where CBS has suffered most this season. In short, "Good Times" is more believable than its major competition. But can it hold up? Can it find scripts as funny as the first, by Bob Peete? ON THE OTHER HANI), Lear's formula of supposedly telling it like it is with a laugh and exaggeration may bring him renewed criticism.

For example: The elder son, James Jr. or "JJ," has a habit of "finding" things. He tells his mom that it isn't stealing because "God gave us more pockets than hands." JJ is played by Jimmie Walker, a tall toothpick of a fellow who dances like a marionette and has a grin so big fl m) LEASES think upon learning he was born before his parents' marriage. THE CAST SEEMS perfect. Ralph Carter as young Michael is lively and sharp; 16-year-old Thelma, appropriately haughty to her brothers and proud of her beauty, is Bern Nadette; and a shapely neighbor friend of Florida's (isn't there always one in these apartment house programs? with a potential to cause marital troubles in future episodes is a character created full-blown first time out by Ja'net (sic) DBois.

Prediction: The next spinoff will be a series starring Jimmie Walker as a musician dude. John Amos and Esther Rolle star as James and Florida Evans in the new comedy series "Good Times." made to condemn them either. While "Maude" seems more and more to rely on laughs from the level of bathroom humor how to zip a fly and winning that we just know he couldn't ever do anything wrong. How we are to cope with this is left up to us. No one actually condones JJ's light-fingers but Florida isn't BAY AREA TV PROGRAMS Highlights Programs listed ire furnished by the stations and are subiect to change without notice.
