St. Petersburg Times, Friday, February 1, 1974 3-D Impulse' But Uneven smiljanfch on film IN MY i Interesting world premiere Wednesday night afS the Clearwater 4 Theatres in Clearwater, complete with spotlights piercing the night sky and a police-escorted entourage arriving by limousine. By DOROTHY SMILJANICII Tlmn Drama Critic "Impulse," filmed In the bay area last year and starring William Shatner and Ruth Roman, had Its As a effort, "Impulse" is impressive. It is troubled, however, by a lack of continuity, and, beyond any other fault, needed a good job of editing. There are numerous dead ends in the film, that contribute nothing such as the obscene telephone call, and the whole segment dealing with Karate Pete.

Neither sequence advances the film's story, and the movie has difficulty enough integrating all its random scenes. Instead of moving with economy toward its very appropriate conclusion, which echoes the opening, the film makes numerous jumps and starts and, at times, is disconcerting. Nonetheless, 11-year-old Kim Nicholas gives a very good performance, although Jenifer Bishop, as her mother, never manages to seem real. She is more like a glamorous mannequin than a genuine person, which robs the film of some of its potential. "Impulse" is interesting as the first offering of Conqueror Films, and at times, it is terrifying.

But it is an uneven production, that could hae benefited from some skillful editing and a bit more atttention to the development of its characters. MINI REVIEW For a half hour, outside the theatre, curious onlookers oggled arriving guests, who included Kim Nicholas, the film's young star; Harold "Odd Job" Sakata, who had a relatively minor role and officials of Conqueror Films the Tampa-based movie company that produced the film. ONCE INSIDE the theatre, the 300 or so by-invitation-only patrons watched the film, which proved to be a blood-spattered suspense thriller about a mad man who murders on impulse. The film's title originally was "Want A Ride, Little Girl?" and it was a stroke of inspiration that such a mundane, harmless title was changed to the more sinister sounding "Impulse," that hints at all sorts of uncontrollable urges. The film benefits from a fine, if at times rather overdone performance by Shatner, who is best remembered as Jim Kirk, captain of the Starship Enterprise on the enormously successful television series "Star Trek." In a role quite at odds with that good captain's mild mannered strength, Shatner portrays in "Impulse" a psychotic charmer named Matt Stone, who by his good looks and preys on defenseless women.

MOTIVATION is given for Stone's insanity in a nice piece of pre-credit background, done in black and white, as opposed to the rest of the film which is in color. The idea, of course, is to present these few terrifying moments as if they were a memory, recalled, like a fading photograph, in the mind of Stone. It is a nice and effective touch. "Impulse" will own to the public with a premiere showing Feb. 7 al the Clearwater 4 Theotres, at and 10 p.m.

Staff Phofo by Tony Lopei DEAR ANN LANDERS: My husband is so mad at my father he'd like to kill him. This is what happened and I wish you'd tell me what can be done about it. In 1965, two years after we were married, Harvey suf-fered a sinking spell and had severe chest pains. We called my father in the middle of the night.

Dad is a physician. He examined Harvey and told him he had a heart problem. He instructed Harvey to "take It easy" and cut out all strenuous activity. This meant giving up handball and tennis. It also made a serious dent in our sex life.

Harvey was so afraid of dying while having sex that he was impotent most of the time. Two weeks ago Harvey caught the flu. My father was out of the country so we called another doctor. He was terribly sick and the doctor put him in the hospital. In a few days he was feeling better and decided to have a complete physical while he was there.

Harvey was seen by six different doctors and received a perfect bill of health. Your Comfiiii nt and Slioiinr Center Stores Store Hours: Daily 9:30 to 8 P.M. All Stores: Saturday 9:30 to 7 P.M.
